Constructed in 1936 during the same period when the Nazis were displaying their autocracy through the Olympic Games, Sachsenhausen was originally aimed at suppressing potential dissidence from the left. However, it quickly got overcrowded with groups and individuals who were victimized by the government due to their race, religion, sexuality, or perceived misfit for the society.
Being the second purpose-built camp and the nearest permanent one to Berlin, Sachsenhausen was designed to serve as a prototype for all following camps. A visit to the Memorial now can give you insights into the progressive development not just of the camp system, but also of the dictatorship as a whole — from discrimination to extermination.
