Established in 1936 by detainees from different camps, Sachsenhausen concentration camp served as the definitive model for other camps under the control of Heinrich Himmler, the notorious SS Leader and newly appointed Chief of Police.
Recognized for its foolproof design and brutalities inflicted upon the inmates, the camp housed more than 200,000 people between 1936 and 1945. Initially, it imprisoned those who opposed the Nazi regime, but later also began to accept Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals, and individuals deemed ‘anti-social’.
Through the historical tour, you will gain a profoundly upsetting understanding of the intolerable conditions endured by the prisoners. After this deeply moving experience, you’ll have the chance to pay homage at the National Memorial, instituted in 1961 within the confines of the camp, before journeying back to Berlin.
