Udawalawe National Park, the sixth largest wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka, is situated 112 miles (180 km) from Colombo in the south-central part of the island. The park lies just south of the Central Highlands, whose escarpment creates a captivating backdrop. Established in 1972, Udawalawe National Park aims to protect the catchment area of the Udawalawe reservoir, which supplies water for agriculture and hydro-power generation. Covering an area of 30,821 hectares, it resembles an African game park.
