For those who prefer to stay dry while still enjoying the stunning scenery, a scenic drive along the iconic R44 Clarens Drive is a must. This breathtaking route snakes along the Eastern Coast of False Bay, offering panoramic views of the ocean and mountains. The rain adds a mystical quality to the landscape, with misty clouds clinging to the mountain peaks.
As you drive, make a stop at Gordon’s Bay, where you can capture the dramatic scenery with your camera. The road is etched into the mountains, creating a sense of adventure as you wind your way along the coast. Keep an eye out for whales and baboons, which are often spotted along this route.

The walkways allow for easy viewing, and the local restaurant, ON THE EDGE, offers a cozy spot to enjoy a delicious lunch while watching the penguins.
Reviewed on 2024-10-06: Visit whilst traveling along the Garden Route - We visited Betty’s Bay penguins on the drive from Franschhoek to Hermanus. It is well worth a stop and our opinion is better than Boulder more penguins and much cheaper, also very few people around. There are facilities cafe and toilets. You get very close to the penguins and the chance to take some close photos of the penguins. We worth a visit if you have the time.
A Sunny Turn: Exploring Betty’s Bay in the Afternoon
As the clouds begin to clear on the second day, the sun emerges, casting a warm glow over Betty’s Bay. The weather is perfect for exploring the town and its surroundings, with temperatures peaking at around 80°F. Take advantage of the clear weather by visiting the local markets, where you can browse for unique souvenirs and sample delicious local delicacies. The vibrant atmosphere of the markets is infectious, and you’ll find yourself drawn to the colorful stalls and friendly vendors.
In the afternoon, consider joining a Penguin Tour to the Stony Point Penguin Colony.
