Highlights
  • Nusretiye Mosque - Nusretiye Mosque is an important Ottoman mosque located in the Tophane district of Istanbul, built during the reign of Mahmud II (1808-1839). Construction of the mosque began in 1823 and was completed in 1826. Its architecture reflects Western influences, showcasing Baroque and Empire styles.

Nusretiye Mosque embodies the characteristics of late Ottoman architecture. The chief architect of the mosque was Krikor Balyan, and it is one of the significant works of the Balyan family. Notable architectural features include a large and impressive dome, slender and tall minarets, a spacious courtyard, and a decorated interior.

After the construction of the mosque, Mahmud II abolished the Janissary Corps and announced the transition to a modern army, an event referred to as “Nusret” (victory). In memory of this victory, the mosque was named “Nusretiye.” The mosque is a significant historical and architectural structure and is considered one of Istanbul’s iconic buildings.

  • Kilic Ali Pasa Mosque - Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque is an important example of Ottoman period architecture located in the Tophane district of Istanbul. The mosque was commissioned by the famous Ottoman admiral (naval commander) Kılıç Ali Paşa. Built between 1578 and 1580, the mosque is the work of Mimar Sinan and features the characteristics of classical Ottoman architecture.

Kılıç Ali Paşa gained fame for achieving significant naval victories in the Mediterranean and was known as a powerful commander of the Ottoman navy.

The area where the mosque is located was reclaimed from the sea, showcasing Mimar Sinan’s engineering skills and his mastery of Istanbul’s geographical features.

Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque was designed not just as a place of worship but also as a complex (külliye). The complex includes a madrasa, a bathhouse, and a tomb. The tomb of Kılıç Ali Paşa is also located within the mosque complex.

  • Mumhane Caddesi - This is a sweet street lined with restaurants and shops, where both locals and tourists enjoy strolling, and where you can feel like a local. From here, we’ll explore the local spots and then head to the bridge.
  • Galata Koprusu - The Galata Bridge, spanning the Golden Horn in Istanbul, is a historic symbol of the city. The first bridge was built in 1845, with the current one completed in 1994. Connecting the historic old city and modern districts, it offers stunning views of landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and Süleymaniye Mosque.

The bridge bustles with fishermen, vendors, and tourists. Below the roadway, numerous restaurants and cafes serve delicious Turkish cuisine, perfect for enjoying local flavors while watching boats pass by.

As we walk across the Galata Bridge into the historic old city, you’ll enjoy spectacular views and see many historic sites. I will show you these landmarks and provide brief explanations of each. The Galata Bridge is a must-visit for anyone exploring Istanbul.

  • Yeni Camii - New Mosque, built in the 17th century and known for its exquisite Ottoman architecture. This mosque dazzles with its impressive decorations and spacious courtyard. Inside, its interior boasts more blue tiles than the famous Blue Mosque.
  • Misir Carsisi (Spice Market) - Next, we visit the Spice Bazaar, located adjacent to the New Mosque. Established in 1660, this vibrant market offers a wide array of spices, dried fruits, and souvenirs, providing a colorful and aromatic shopping experience.
  • Hagia Sophia Mosque - Hagia Sophia (Outside Visit)

We’ll then proceed to Hagia Sophia, which we will admire from the outside. Constructed in 537 AD, this monumental structure has witnessed both Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Recently reconverted to a mosque in 2020, Hagia Sophia continues to captivate with its historical significance and stunning architecture.

  • Blue Mosque - Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii - Outside Visit)

Facing Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque is our next stop. Completed in 1616, this mosque is renowned for its six minarets and intricate blue tiles. While both mosques are famed for their beauty, the interior of the New Mosque boasts a richer display of blue tiles.

  • Grand Bazaar - Next, we head to the Grand Bazaar, founded in 1461 and one of the largest covered markets in the world. With over 4,000 shops, it offers an unparalleled shopping experience. Enjoy a delicious Turkish kebab for lunch at a local restaurant within the bazaar.

  • Corlulu Ali Pasa Medresesi - After lunch, we’ll visit the Çorlulu Ali Paşa Medrese, a 300-year-old historic medrese where you can relax with tea, coffee, or nargile in a tranquil atmosphere, experiencing daily life as locals do.

  • Sahaflar Carsisi - Second-hand Booksellers Market (Sahaflar Çarşısı) We then proceed to the Second-hand Booksellers Market, located near Istanbul University. This market is a treasure trove of historical books and manuscripts, perfect for book enthusiasts.

  • Suleymaniye Mosque - Our next destination is the Süleymaniye Mosque, Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece completed in 1557. It offers one of Istanbul’s most breathtaking views and a serene ambiance to appreciate the city’s beauty.

  • Uzun Çarşı Caddesi - After Süleymaniye, we explore the local shopping areas preferred by Istanbul residents. Here, you can shop away from the tourist crowds and interact with local shopkeepers. (shopping is optional just to feel experince as a local)

  • Galata Koprusu - Finally, we conclude our tour at Galata Bridge, spanning the Golden Horn and connecting Istanbul’s two sides. Take in panoramic views of the city and the Bosporus Strait.

  • Galataport Istanbul - Our tour ends at Galataport, a modern port and shopping center with elegant restaurants, cafes, and shops, offering a stunning view of the Istanbul skyline. Relax and reflect on your day over a coffee or explore the shops before departing.

Implemented brilliantly - Nothing less than genially implemented. Imran is a great guide with great historical knowledge and an honest and realistic approach to the city's sights and our needs. We can only recommend him and his guided tours. If we could give more than 5 stars, we did. We have had a tour far beyond what was expected.

Best tour of Istanbul - What a lovely day. Imran picked us up at the port and was even there when we arrived 10 min early. We explained that we weren’t interested in waiting in line all day to see things and asked him to take us where he would take his friends to view the city. He brought us to beautiful mosques that had no one in them so we were able to enjoy them and take lots of pictures. We went to a spice shop off the beaten path with the best Turkish delights. He brought us to the yummiest restuarant for kebabs. 10/10 recommend you stop here. Finally ended our day at the Grand Bazaar. Definitely would recommend Imran for your tour of Istanbul.
