It is the oldest Buddhist sanctuary in existence and was a major Buddhist centre in India until the 12th century A.D.
- Udayagiri Caves - 13 km from Sanchi, Udayagiri Caves date back to 4th-5th Century AD. The caves possess all the distinctive features that gave Gupta art its unique vitality, vigour and richness of expression; the beautifully moulded capitals, the treatment of the intercolumniation, the design of the entranceway and the system of continuing the architrave as a string-course around the structures are very worth a visit.
