  • Palace Theater - As seen on the TV series Haunted Towns, this historic theater, built in 1925, is the scene of contemporary ghost reports.
  • Kalakaua Park - A massive banyan tree, a large lotus-adorned reflecting pool, and a statue of Hawaii’s last king, are the backdrop for supernatural stories surrounding the annual Merrie Monarch Festival.
  • Pacific Tsunami Museum - Dedicated to those killed by devastating tidal waves in Hilo, the museum is the perfect place to discuss the waves of ghost sightings that followed as well as the Buddhist ritual used to dispel them.

Additional Information

Fondly called the Pacific’s New Orleans, Hilo is a vibrant, historical town adorned with stunning murals, becoming a hub for music, mystery, and magic. It’s been a backdrop for disastrous tsunamis and the roaming spirits left by these calamities. Hilo’s arc-shaped bay also witnessed King Kamehameha’s massive expedition of 800 war canoes, as he strived to unify the main Hawaiian Islands. The place comes alive during the annual Merrie Monarch Festival, which often becomes a battlefield for spell-wielding rival hula dancers. Experience the local lore of extraordinary supernatural phenomena, inclusive of modern-day anecdotes involving meetings with Hawaiian gods like the volcanic fury, Pele, and Mo’oinanea, the queen of the mo’o, formidable local protectors blending human and dragon traits. Given its frequent precipitation, this exotic locale hands out free rain ponchos upon request.

An really fun evening activity - Our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable from living for years on the island, and our entire tour group went to the local movie theater afterwards just in time for the 7:00 showing! I loved it and would highly recommend this as an evening activity.

Excellent! - This tour was fantastic and so much more than we expected! The haunted portion of the tour was very interesting, but we were blown away by our guide's knowledge of island history and culture. We asked a lot of questions and she didn't miss a beat. She spoke of people from hundreds of years ago as if she knew them personally, and events as if she'd witnessed them herself. Highly recommended!

Good tour, happy I did it - I've done lots and lots of ghost tours in lots of places in the US. This one was pretty unique compared to others that I've taken because it was a lot more history and less ghost stories than I would normally expect. The guide was very nice and she has been living in Hawaii for a long time so she is quite knowledgeable. I think I probably would have preferred more ghost / supernatural stories and less history but I really enjoyed the tour and I did learn a lot. She also gave us tea leaf leis for protection, which I thought was really nice.

The tour guide asking if... - The tour guide asking if we have encountered any ghosts in our life. Great thing to do when you want to find some historical info about a place.
