Great stop on the Big Island - What a delightful experience! Learning about the history of the baumkuchen “tree cake” and how it is made on this farm and the unique Hawaiian flavors was interesting. Seeing the farm and the other things they are growing and then tasting baumkuchen samples finishes off the free tour nicely. But if you really want a nice afternoon, plan carefully so that you can do a free tour at 1:00 and book a paid baumstriezel experience at 2:30. You’ll have the opportunity to cook your own treat over a fire (and eat it) as well as visit with the owners and learn even more about their farm and baumkuchen business. This was a highlight of our time on the Big Island.

it is a wonderful way to spend an hour or so. - We were on the Big Island searching for things to do and came across this place. It was a wonderful experience. They only do the tours on Tuesday and Thursday at 1:00pm. Baking happens on Thursday mornings. We showed up for a Tuesday afternoon tour. This husband and wife team were so kind. The first half of the tour Markus teaches about Baumkuchen. You can hear his pride and passion. The second half he shares about the property... which has little to do with "tree cakes" but shares information about Palm trees and plants you probably did not know. It ends with some Baumkuchen samples, which are delicious. You really can't leave without buying at least one! (or 4 like we did) :) it is a wonderful way to spend an hour or so.

Great German Baumkuchen (Tree Cake) - This was a unique stop on our visit to Hilo on the Big Island Hawaii because it is not Hawaiin related per se but we are into baking so it intrigued us. We had never heard of Baumkuchen (tree cake) before and were intrigued by the shape and layers of the cake. We initially went on a farm tour on a Friday and were so interested in their process of making this circular cake, we drove back on a baking day the following week to watch them make the cakes from start to finish. The owners, Marie & Markus, have a passion for their business and make very good products. They and their staff are very pleasant and provided alot of history on their product, how they came to Hawaii and the vanilla they are currently growing on their farm. On our next visit to the Big Island, we will schedule a trip back for the Baumstriezel cake making over the open fire.

worth a short stop. - Interesting piece of German history in awaii. The equipment is cool and so is the operation. The cake itself was expensive for what you get. Still cool. Mild flavor. Wish it had more . The history of Baumkucken and the property was very interesting. Friendly folks. Try the flavored salts they sell.
