Big Island Farms extends over 64 acres, set stunningly along the Hamakua Coast with a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean from Waipio to Hilo. The iconic Hamakua canal bisects the farm into two sizeable portions, facilitating the flow of water from the untouched Kohala forest reserve and bestowing irrigation to the farm’s lower (makai) region.
The higher (Mauka) section, located above the canal, boasts organically cultivated Macadamia and Kukui nuts (also known as candle nut). In contrast, the parcel below the canal houses a variety of permaculture food forests, coconut groves, themed gardens, and residential quarters utilized for our educational programs on Big Island. These gardens are teeming with over 200 distinct species of edible and medicinal flora, such as Coffee, Banana, Papaya, Cassava, Taro, Ginger, Turmeric, Cacao, Avocado, Breadfruit, Coconut, Sugar Can, Sweet Potatoes, Kukui, Ti (KI), and an extensive selection of Bamboos, to highlight a few.
