Big Island Farms Tour - fascinating introduction to sustainable agriculture on the Big Island - My husband and I had a tour last week at Big Island Farms. We came away impressed with the level of care and stewardship at the farm. Tours are private, which gives visitors a chance to ask as many questions as they'd like. Our guide, Amy, was very helpful and is clearly passionate about her work. It was a lovely way to see something that's a bit off the beaten tourist path. For those interested in sustainable farming, or who are simply fascinated by the amazing flora that thrive on the Big Island, this one-hour tour is a worthwhile activity.

A lot to learn and enjoy here - We enjoyed our time at this farm. They were very accommodating of my wife, who was having knee issues and didn't want to do the full "food forest" tour. The owner gave us a private tour of their new demonstration garden near the office. We did get to enjoy the sample tray of flowers, fruits, leaves, and nuts (see picture). Very informative and friendly staff. They even offered my wife some tinctures that might help with her condition.

Inspiring - I really enjoyed this tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable. I feel like I could have spent days/hours/weeks and only learn a fraction of the knowledge she has. It was very inspiring and I have already started thinking about the food forest I want to plant in my yard!

Island permaculture in action - Exactly what we were looking for. Sinead gave a great tour of the farm from the permaculture perspective. She answered all of our numerous questions regarding the farm design/layout and strategies, cover crops, composting, natural pesticides, pollinators, sacrificial plants, etc. If you’re interested in regenerative farming and permaculture/food forests: this farm is worth the time!

Big farms, little farms, some as big as your head - They've got a lovely bunch of coconuts! And bananas, and mangoes, and many other plants both tropical and mundane. Big Island Farms was just about the "smallest" experience we partook in while visiting the island, but the rustic and down to earth walk around the farm was a complete joy to partake in. Our guide, Neal, was friendly, outgoing, full of knowledge, and eager to share the lay of the land, how they operate, what their plans are, and diverse other topics from the island itself to finding good food. The walk was fairly easy, and every few steps were new plants to look at with an occasional sample fresh from the field, or story of the varmints that roam around. At some points in the year the lush land should provide a much wider variety of samples, but as out of season as we were we still enjoyed a few tasty surprises culminating in freshly shelled mac nuts - which were a delicious surprise to someone who doesn't care for them. Overall, we really enjoyed the excuse to drive across the island and explore a little bit of tropics that we otherwise wouldn't have seen. We definitely recommend setting aside a bit of time and walking around Big Island Farms.

Fun and unique experience - We loved our farm tour. We are frequent visitors to the Big Island and avid gardeners, and we still learned so much that we didn't know. Neil was awesome, answering our questions and laughed at our all our jokes. Highly recommend if you're into gardening, tropical plants, conservation, or just looking for a unique experience away from the usual tourist activities.
