• Banyan Drive - Begin your journey to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park by driving along the historic Banyan Drive, a tree-lined street on the Hilo shoreline in Hawaii. Known as the “Hilo Walk of Fame,” this area features banyan trees planted by celebrities. These trees have survived multiple tsunamis that have struck the Big Island of Hawaii. Each tree still bears the name of its planter, honoring movie stars, religious leaders, political figures, famous authors, adventurers, and local Hawaiians.

• Liliuokalani Gardens - Blink and you might think you’re in Japan as you wander through the serene Liliʻuokalani Gardens, named after Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Liliʻuokalani. Situated on Hilo’s Banyan Drive, this authentic 24.67-acre Japanese garden was dedicated in 1917 to honor Hawaii’s first Japanese immigrants who worked in the island’s sugar cane fields.

This beautifully landscaped park features arching bridges over fishponds, rock gardens, pagodas, Japanese stone lanterns, and a teahouse. Views of Hilo Bay and Mokuola (Coconut Island) add to the tranquil atmosphere. With so much to see, this park is a popular spot for families exploring the Hilo area.

• Rainbow Falls - Rainbow Falls is a breathtaking waterfall that plunges 80 feet into the Wailuku River below. Surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, this waterfall is just a 5-minute drive from downtown Hilo. Known as Waiānuenue in Hawaiian, the name means “rainbow [seen in] water,” fitting for these falls as the rising sun often creates a stunning rainbow in the mist.

Visit Rainbow Falls to experience the home of Hina, the ancient Hawaiian moon goddess, who is said to reside in a lava cave behind the falls. This peaceful oasis is a fantastic place to visit early in the morning to view the falls and explore the beautiful natural surroundings.

  Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park protects some of the world’s most unique geological, biological, and cultural landscapes. Stretching from sea level to 13,680 feet, the park includes the summits of two of the world’s most active volcanoes - Kīlauea and Mauna Loa - and is a designated International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will then head to the summit of Kilauea volcano at Volcanoes National Park, one of the most revered volcanic areas on Earth. The park showcases two of the world’s most active volcanoes—Kilauea and Mauna Loa—and offers insights into the formation of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes. At the park, you will visit the Visitor Center, see the spectacular collapsed caldera, steam vents, sulfur banks, and scenic lookouts. No trip to Hawaii is complete without visiting Volcanoes National Park.

• Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube - The Nāhuku lava tube is one of the few accessible lava tubes in the park and is considered the most popular destination besides the summit of Kilauea. Walking through a tall tunnel formed by a 500-year-old river of lava is an incredible and memorable experience. It’s hard to imagine that this empty space was once a fast-moving torrent of molten rock from Kilauea volcano. Equally astonishing is that Nahuku is accessed by a beautiful, easy trail surrounded by lush native rainforest. Towering tree ferns, ohia trees, and rare Hawaiian plants thrive where this massive flow once dominated the landscape.
