Hawaiian Sea Turtles: Kailua-Kona Wildlife Tour

Embark on a 5-6 hour cruise ship-friendly tour in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and experience the highlights of the area. Discover historical cultural sights, taste famous Kona coffee, enjoy scenic views, and encounter Hawaiian sea turtles.

Duration: 5 hours
Cancellation: 24 hours
Highlights
  • Kailua Pier - The tour begins at the Kailua Kona Pier. Upon disembarking from the ship tender, guests should head to the green shaded tent and look for the guide holding a “C Big Island Tours” sign.
  • Greenwell Farms - Nestled on the volcanic slopes, this area offers an ideal climate for the renowned Kona Coffee. Hawaii is the only U.S. state that cultivates coffee, with all beans hand-picked. Discover the process of growing, harvesting, and packaging Kona coffee, and enjoy samples of some of the finest brews.
  • Please note that the coffee farm may not always be Greenwell Farms. Occasionally, due to closures, the tour may visit Bay View Farm instead.
  • The Painted Church - Traveling south towards South Kona and through Captain Cook Village, the tour will visit the renowned “Painted Church,” famous for its interior wooden walls adorned with 3D biblical depictions painted with ordinary house paint.
  • Honaunau Poke Shop - A stop is made to purchase lunch from a local vendor in this area. Please be aware that this lunch stop may not be open on certain days, and an alternative option will be provided.
  • Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park - The Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park Visitor Center is located at the National Historic Landmarked archaeological site known as the Honokōhau Settlement. Established on November 10, 1978, the park aims to preserve, protect, and interpret traditional native Hawaiian activities and culture.
  • Honokohau Marina & Small Boat Harbor - The Honokohau Turtle Trail Walk (30 min) offers an easy but uneven path. Following this, guests can enjoy a leisurely stroll down a trail (100 yards, 10 min walk) to a stunning white sand beach and an archaeological site featuring a Hawaiian Fish Trap made with lava rock and a reconstructed Hawaiian Hut. This area is also home to local wildlife, including native birds and Hawaiian green sea turtles!

Memorable, Stunning, Fun, Easy & lots of Variety with Care - Greenwell farm was beautiful. It had such an amazing variety of plants, fruit, coffee and cocoa trees. The coffee tasting was wonderful. Next we visited the Church, which had beautiful murals painted by the priest. Lastly, the Historic Kona Beach was stunning. The soft sandy beaches were both sunny and shady. The water was so clear you can see turtles swimming through the water around you. Our guide was a wonderful host from Hilo and was very knowledgeable about the area. He made the trip very memorable! He was willing to help anyone young or old who needed a extra hand or wanted to stay behind on the bus for a stop.

Disappointing - Mostly I was disappointed with this trip. If they had told me beforehand more details I probably wouldn’t have gone on this one. I was disappointed with the turtles. They were not out on land and difficult to see in the water. The historic park was small and there was nothing to do but read signs as you walked around a trail. The coffee farm was ok but again there wasn’t much to see. The painted church was small but probably my favorite thing on this tour. The tour bus I was in was very hot. I think I could have found something else to do if I had known more about the details ahead of time.
