From Port to Palace: A Surfer’s Journey Through Beijing
When the waves are calm, I seek adventure on land. This time, it was a two-day self-guided tour from Tianjin Port to Beijing, with an English-speaking driver. Join me as I explore the Great Wall and the heart of Beijing.
Setting Sail from Tianjin Port
The sun was just beginning to rise as I found myself at Tianjin Port, ready to embark on a two-day adventure that promised to be as thrilling as catching the perfect wave. The air was crisp, and the anticipation was palpable. My English-speaking driver greeted me with a warm smile, holding a sign with my name, a small but comforting touch that set the tone for the journey ahead.
As we set off towards the Mutianyu Great Wall, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom akin to paddling out into the open ocean. The drive was smooth, and the scenery gradually transformed from the bustling port city to the serene landscapes that surround the Great Wall. It was a three-hour ride, but time seemed to fly by as I soaked in the views and chatted with my driver about the best local spots to grab a bite.
Conquering the Great Wall
Arriving at the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall was like finding an undiscovered surf break. The wall stretched out before me, majestic and awe-inspiring, with far fewer tourists than I had anticipated. It was a refreshing change from the crowded beaches I often find myself on.
I spent the morning exploring the wall, taking in the breathtaking scenery and marveling at the history etched into every stone. The driver was incredibly helpful, providing tips on the best routes to take and even assisting with ticket purchases. It was a self-guided tour, but I never felt lost or overwhelmed.
After a morning of exploration, I took a break for lunch at a local restaurant recommended by my driver. The food was as authentic as the waves I chase, and it fueled me for the rest of the day’s adventures. By evening, I was comfortably settled into my hotel in Beijing, ready to rest and recharge for the next day’s exploration.
Exploring Beijing’s Heart
The second day began with a sense of excitement, much like the feeling of spotting a perfect swell on the horizon. My driver picked me up from the hotel, and we set off to explore the heart of Beijing. The city was alive with energy, and I was eager to dive into its rich history.
Tiananmen Square was our first stop, a place teeming with stories and significance. I wandered through the square, taking in the sights and sounds, before making my way to the Forbidden City. The sheer scale and grandeur of the palace complex were overwhelming, much like the vastness of the ocean.
The day continued with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, a masterpiece of ancient architecture. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but draw parallels between the meticulous craftsmanship of the temple and the art of surfing. Both require patience, skill, and a deep respect for nature.
As the sun began to set, my driver and I made our way back to Tianjin Port. The two-day journey had been a whirlwind of discovery and adventure, leaving me with memories as vivid as the sunsets I chase around the world. If you’re looking for a unique way to explore Beijing, I highly recommend the Tianjin to Beijing Adventure. It’s a ride you won’t soon forget.
