Exploring Amish Traditions: A Family Adventure in Bird in Hand
When I stumbled upon the Amish Experience in Bird in Hand, I knew it was a must-try for our family. The promise of exploring Amish farmlands and learning about their way of life was too intriguing to resist.
A Journey Through Time: The Amish Farmlands
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can offer both fun and education for the whole family. When I heard about the Amish Experience in Bird in Hand, I knew it was something I had to try. The idea of exploring the Amish farmlands and learning about their way of life was too intriguing to pass up.
Our adventure began with a 90-minute guided tour on a cozy 14-passenger shuttle. Our guide, Bruce, was a gem. His easygoing and open style made the experience feel personal and engaging. He entertained all my many questions, which I really appreciated. As a former teacher, I know how important it is to foster curiosity, and Bruce did just that. The kids were fascinated by the stunning panoramas of patchwork farms, and I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty of the oldest Amish community.
Immersive Learning: The Multimedia Experience
One of the highlights of the tour was the multimedia experience at the Amish Experience Theater. I hadn’t ever seen something like that before, and it was a hit with the whole family. The film “Jacob’s Choice” was both entertaining and educational, providing insights into the Amish lifestyle and traditions. It was a perfect way to set the stage for the rest of our tour.
Deanna, another guide, joined us for this part of the tour. Her dry wit added a fun twist to the experience, though her delivery was a bit rushed at times. I could see how it might be challenging for those who don’t speak English as a first language, but her willingness to answer spontaneous questions made up for it. The kids loved her humor, and it kept them engaged throughout the presentation.
Stepping Into Amish Life: The Homestead and Schoolhouse
The tour continued with visits to a nine-room homestead and a one-room schoolhouse. Walking through these spaces really concretized the learnings for me. The homestead, dwelling of the fictional Daniel and Lizzie Fisher family, was a fascinating glimpse into Amish traditions, including their plain clothing and electricity-free lifestyle.
The one-room schoolhouse was a particular favorite for my kids. As a former elementary school teacher, I found it especially interesting to compare the Amish educational system with our own. The simplicity and focus on community values were inspiring, and it sparked some great conversations with my children about different ways of living and learning.
Overall, the Amish Experience was a fantastic ethnocultural learning opportunity. It was good value for the money, and I’ve already recommended it to friends and family. If you’re looking for a unique family adventure that combines fun, education, and a bit of history, this tour is a must-do!
