Highlights
  • Bishoftu Lake - The best way to appreciate this scenic body of water is from the crater rim at one of the hotels, drink in hand. The view is sensational. According to local lore, this, the second-deepest lake in Ethiopia, is home to a sleeping devil. From time to time his evil gases kill the fish and send them bobbing to the surface to be scooped up by delighted waterbirds.
  • Hora Lake - Lying just north of the town centre, Lake Hora is the wildest of Bishoftu’s lakes and features some outstanding birdlife along its lushly vegetated slopes. There’s a footpath around the lake, but never go alone as theft is a real concern. Sadly there’s no reliable local guide that can be recommended in the area.
  • The Viewpoint Lodge Resort - Lake Babogaya (formerly named Bishoftu Guda) is the site of most of Bishoftu’s high-end resorts. With its beautiful backdrop of volcanic Mt Yerer, this circular lake is scenic to boot. There will be a boat trip on this Lake

Excellent guide, boat trip, etc - Takes a bit of time to get there but it is worth it. We had coffee next to one crater and was rowed out on another, and I did some rowing, then it was time for lunch which was at a resort next to another water filled crater, which was nice, followed by a two man canoe trip. A great guide ( Belete ), kept us informed. A great day out.

Lakes - The lakes are nice and worth the trip, which was pleasant and without any delays or problems. The tourist guide was nice, however I encourage him to be more sharing with the group about surrounding information etc

Nice but ..... - The beauty of the craters! was stunning It's a good trip, but it had several butts. Only one boat ride which was disturbed with constant talking from the three staff members. Could not really enjoy the serenity of the lake. The drive was lovely, in a brand new car! The driver joined us for lunch, which I thought was odd. But it was a good trip a little expensive for one boat ride, I thought. But where is perfection in this world. All things work together for the good. Some strange characters came out of the woods at the last lake. One was staring pretty hard, came toward me and I had to think fast to get away from him, as I did not know what was going to happen. Tour guide did not see this. So you might want to lock your belongings in the car.

Pleasant day away from the city - Very pleasant day away from the hustle and bustle of Addis and only a short drive. I only visited 2 lakes (was advertised as 3) but the 2 were very nice. The boat trip was very pleasant and charming. I was then back on the mini bus to the lunch stop which was overlooking the 2nd lake. The lunch was fantastic and was a sharing platter with injerra and was great to share this experience with locals. The next stop was the traditional coffee tasting and then back to Addis. Would have like some free time and a walk round the lakes as they were Beautiful. Pleasant day but could be a little longer
