• Utica - Utica is among the earliest Phoenician trading posts established on African soil, likely around 1100 BC. As the oldest city of Carthage, Utica served as the capital for a significant period before being eclipsed by its neighboring city, founded in the late 9th century BC, which quickly gained prominence. Linked to the fortunes of its neighbor, Utica experienced both prosperous and challenging times. However, during the pivotal conflict between Carthage and Rome, Utica wisely aligned with the victorious side, which in 146 BC, earned it the honor of becoming the capital of Africa once more for 130 years. The archaeological site of Utica, now situated 12 km from the sea due to the deltaic buildup at the Medjerda River’s mouth, features a few surface structures, including the impressive “waterfall house,” along with other houses, temples, a forum, thermal baths, and remnants of theaters, circuses, and amphitheaters.
• Ghar El Melh - Established at the onset of the Phoenician settlement in Tunisia (1101 BC), like Utica, the ancient Rusucmona quickly became a renowned trading post, serving as Utica’s port. It later evolved into a significant base for Barbarian privateers. Since ancient times, the residents of Ghar El Melh have primarily engaged in agriculture and fishing. Recognized as a Wetland of International Importance, Ghar El Melh was the first city in North Africa and the Middle East to receive Ramsar’s Wetland City Accreditation Award, acknowledging its commitment to wetland protection and sustainability. Ghar El Melh actively promotes the ecological significance of its wetlands, while also appreciating their sociocultural value and their role in the region’s rich historical heritage. A drive around the lake to the wetlands with a stop for local street food is highly recommended.
