Exploring the Belgian Coast: A Family Adventure from Brussels
Eager to explore the historical and cultural treasures of the Belgian coast, I embarked on a full-day private tour from Brussels. Join me as I recount the captivating journey through Oostend, De Haan, and Knokke, where history, luxury, and nature intertwine.
A Journey Through Time in Oostend
Our adventure began in the charming coastal town of Oostend, often referred to as “The Queen of the North Sea.” This title is well-deserved, as the town was a favorite retreat for the nobility during the 19th century, under the reign of King Leopold II. As we strolled through the town, the grandeur of the “Belle Epoque” houses transported us back to a time of elegance and sophistication. The Venetian Galleries, with their stunning views of the sea, provided a perfect backdrop for a leisurely walk.
Our children were particularly fascinated by the historical sailing ship “Mercator,” a three-masted vessel that once sailed under the command of the polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache. The ship’s rich history and the tales of its voyages captivated their imaginations, making it a highlight of our visit. We also took a moment to visit the St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, a beautiful structure built in memory of Queen Louise Marie d’Orléans, who spent her final days in Oostend.
Discovering De Haan’s Hidden Charms
After a brief respite, we continued our journey to De Haan, a picturesque villa resort that has retained its historical charm by prohibiting buildings taller than four floors. The town’s romantic lanes and dunes, lined with “Belle Epoque” houses, offered a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Our family enjoyed a leisurely stroll, taking in the beauty of the architecture and the tranquility of the surroundings.
One of the most intriguing stops was Villa Savoyarde, where Albert Einstein once resided for several months. The villa’s history sparked a lively discussion with our children about the life and achievements of the renowned physicist. De Haan’s commitment to preserving its historical character made it a truly unique destination on our tour.
A Taste of Luxury and Nature in Knokke
Our final destination was Knokke, the most exclusive resort along the Belgian coast. Known for its luxury boutiques, art galleries, and casinos, Knokke offered a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the region. However, it was the nearby Nature Reserve “The Zwin” that truly captured our hearts. This unique reserve, governed by the rhythm of the sea, is home to an exceptional array of wildlife and features a permanent interactive exhibition center.
Before heading to the reserve, we made a delightful stop at “Moeder Siska,” a waffle house that has been serving delectable waffles since 1832. The waffles were a hit with the whole family, providing a sweet end to our day of exploration. The Zwin’s interactive exhibits and the opportunity to observe wildlife in their natural habitat made it an educational and engaging experience for our children, perfectly aligning with our goal of blending cultural exploration with family-friendly activities.
Our day along the Belgian coast was a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, offering something for every member of the family. From the historical allure of Oostend and De Haan to the luxurious charm of Knokke and the natural wonders of The Zwin, this tour was an unforgettable journey through the riches of the Belgian coast.
