As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing the perfect wave along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I find myself drawn inland, seeking new adventures that offer a different kind of thrill. This time, my journey took me to the heart of Costa Rica’s sugarcane industry in Boca Arenal, where I embarked on the La Fortuna Sugarcane Experience.

The day began with a gentle wagon ride through the lush fields of Ingenio Cutris. The air was thick with the sweet scent of sugarcane, and the sun cast a golden glow over the landscape. As we meandered through the fields, our guide shared insights into the sustainable practices that define Costa Rica’s sugar industry. As someone who spends most of his time analyzing wave conditions and weather patterns, I found the parallels between surfing and farming intriguing. The final leg of our journey took us to the industrial factory, where the raw sugarcane is transformed into the sweet crystals we all know and love. Watching the machinery in action was a mesmerizing experience, as the stalks were crushed, boiled, and refined into pure sugar. The factory buzzed with energy, a testament to the hard work and dedication of the workers who keep this industry thriving.
