Catching Air in Tulum: A Surfer’s Kitesurfing Adventure
When the waves of Central America call, I usually answer with a surfboard. But this time, Tulum’s kitesurfing scene beckoned. Join me as I dive into a new adventure, guided by expert instructors and the promise of catching air.
A New Adventure in Tulum
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, but kitesurfing was a new frontier for me. The allure of Tulum, with its pristine beaches and vibrant culture, was irresistible. My wife and I decided to take a break from our usual surf spots and dive into the world of kitesurfing. We booked a few days at the Chiringuito Tulum Hotel, a charming spot that promised a unique experience.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by the warm sun and the gentle breeze that whispered promises of adventure. The kitesurfing lessons were tailored to our individual needs, ensuring a safe and fun learning process. Our instructor, Ian, was not only a skilled kitesurfer but also the owner of a local taco joint, Crazy Fish. His laid-back demeanor and patience made the learning curve enjoyable.
The first day was all about understanding the basics—wind directions, kite control, and safety measures. Ian’s methodical approach, combined with his friendly nature, made the experience both educational and entertaining. We spent hours on the beach, practicing our kite flying skills and getting a feel for the equipment.
The Thrill of the Ride
By the second day, we were ready to hit the water. The lessons were progressive, each building on the last, and Ian’s guidance was invaluable. We learned how to body drag, a crucial skill for any kitesurfer. The feeling of being pulled by the kite, skimming across the water, was exhilarating.
The highlight of our trip was a road trip to Isla Blanca, a kitesurfing paradise north of Cancun. The location was perfect for beginners and seasoned kitesurfers alike, with its calm lagoon and stunning views. The shallow waters provided a safe environment to practice, and the camaraderie among the kitesurfers was infectious.
On this final day, we were introduced to the board. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Ian and Inigo, another instructor, were there to guide us every step of the way. Their tailored approach to teaching ensured that we understood the concepts and could apply them effectively.
A New Passion Discovered
As the sun set on our last day, I reflected on the journey. While I didn’t master kitesurfing in those few days, the experience was far from a failure. The instructors at Prokite were exceptional, and their passion for the sport was contagious. I left Tulum with a newfound appreciation for kitesurfing and a desire to continue learning.
The adventure didn’t just end with the lessons. I felt a connection with Ian and Inigo, two individuals who shared their love for the ocean and the sport. It’s these connections that make our nomadic lifestyle so fulfilling.
For anyone looking to try kitesurfing, I highly recommend this experience. It’s a journey of discovery, not just of the sport, but of oneself. And who knows, you might just find a new passion along the way.
