Laguna Verde - Visit “Laguna Verde”
Upon entering Bolivia, a unique landscape unfolds, dominated by the Licancabur Volcano and the twin bodies of Laguna Verde, a gem of the Eduardo Avaroa Flora and Fauna Reserve and our first stop on this unparalleled 4X4 expedition. We will approach Laguna Verde, situated at the base of the Licancabur Volcano.
Laguna Blanca - Visit to Laguna Blanca
Salvador Dali Desert - Visit “Salvador Dali Desert”
As we proceed, another vast expanse opens up: the Valley of the Ladies of the Desert, followed by the Termas de Polques, where we can enjoy a full-body bath before heading to the Geysers of Sol de Mañana, a remarkable sign of volcanic activity in the area.
Laguna Colorada - Visit to “Laguna Colorada”
Continuing through desert regions, we reach the crown jewel of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, Laguna Colorada, the main nesting site for three species of flamingos. The algae, activated by solar radiation and wind, give the lagoon its pink hue, which also colors the legs and parts of the plumage of these exotic birds. These stunning deserts showcase a full palette of terracotta colors—reds, oranges, ochres, bronzes, browns, and beiges—capturing the traveler’s attention at every turn.
Arbol de Piedra - Visit “Arbol de Piedra”
Here, we will see the stone tree and encounter the proud vicuña, a wild camelid, often seen in small groups along our route.
Aguas Termales de Polques - Visit to Hot Spring
We will continue to our hostel in Polques, where we will stay overnight in private rooms.
Polques - San Juan
Aguas Termales de Polques - Today, we will continue our journey to the Ramadita, Honda, Chiarkota, Hedionda, and Cañapa Lagoons, where we can observe and photograph numerous flamingos of the three local species. Other birds, such as Andean gulls and ducks, also inhabit these lagoons, which are flanked by often snow-capped volcanoes. These volcanoes descend into green skirts of hardy straw, yareta, and thola, ending in the ochre hues shaped by millennia of wind, or in the unusual colors from the borax and sulfur of these unique lagoons.
Geiser Sol de la Manana - Visit to “Sol de mañana Geyser”
Laguna Hedionda - Visit “Laguna Hedionda” and see the flamingos
We will continue to the Mirador del Ollagüe for a picnic lunch.
To continue our journey, we will set off in the 4X4. After about an hour, we will arrive at the abandoned farmhouse of Cuye, where we will get our first view of the Salar. Then, we will head to the Komancha canyon in Sinalaco, a deep crevice carved by a river that flows only during the rainy season. We will cross the canyon in a 90-minute walk, navigating minor level changes, while capturing the high side walls with their mysterious rock formations and textures.
Overnight at the Salt Hostel in SAN JUAN, which features private bathrooms and hot water (D, A, C).
San Juan - Salar de Uyuni - Uyuni
Salar de Uyuni - Today, we will explore the lesser-known parts of the salt flats, or Salar Sensual. We will drive our 4X4 towards Ch’jini, a rarely visited but incredibly beautiful area.
This intimate corner of the Salar Sensual offers unparalleled scenic beauty and a spiritual presence emanating from ancient stone buildings over a thousand years old, prompting reflection on the lives of ancestral populations.
Isla Incahuasi - Visit to “Incahuasi Island”
We will then return to the center of the Salar to visit Incahuasi Island, a tourist attraction with a path leading to its summit, offering an extraordinary 360-degree view. The island is notable for its giant cacti (Echinopsis atacamensis) and the petrified volcanic lava-like rock formations, which originated from “Blue Alga” or Fossil Stromatolites, some of the oldest life forms on Earth. These underwater bacteria developed during the times of Lake Michín (40,000 years ago) and Lake Tauka (11,000 years ago), which submerged the entire island.
We will continue to the Colchani Salt Mounds, with brief stops at the Hotel de Sal Museum and a water hole. These will be our final stops in the Salar, where we will take our last photographs at sunset while enjoying national cocktails and exotic drinks.
Museo de la Llama y la Sal - Visit Colchani Town
Half an hour later, we will arrive in Uyuni, concluding our services with the assurance of having provided an unforgettable experience in this part of the world (D, A).
