The Palace was constructed by Cardinal Borromeo between 1562 and 1563, following a design by architect Antonio Morandi, also known as Terribilia, to serve as the University seat.

The hall, named Theatre for its distinctive amphitheatre shape, was designed in 1637 for anatomical lessons by Bolognese architect Antonio Paolucci, also known as Levanti, a student of the Carraccis.
