Outstanding Private Walking Food Tour - Christina, our guide, was very knowledgeable about all of Bologna, history as well as food. Had four excellent tastings - balsamic vinegar, tigella, tortellini, and gelato. Toured markets and vendor stalls on food streets. Ended up replacing dinner plans. Excellent tour!

Great Tour of the City and Food! - Highly recommend on your first day of Bologna as the guide points out many of the important landmark with history and take you around the markets and restaurants areas with a great amount of Bolognese traditional food! Then you can go back to the places to explore some more later~ Thoroughly enjoyed this tour!

Appreciation for Quality of Food in Bologna - Our guide Benedetta was excellent. Our group learned so much about the food of Bologna.
We gain such an appreciation for the quality and the history of food in Italy and specifically Bologna. I enthusiastically recommend this tour to anyone visiting Bologna.

Era cosi cosi - Great acete (vinager) tasting to start the tour, and nice small meal with traditional Tuscan sandwich. But we didn't taste any cheeses or sliced meats. The pasta was a little basic so slightly disappointing. We thought the tour would ramp up, but it slipped a bit after the first two stops. Especially for price. Guide was kind and very informative.

Great history tour, not a food tour - Our guide was lovely (didn’t introduce herself so not sure of her name). She had a great knowledge of Bologna but no food knowledge. She didn’t seem to know the agenda for the food part. We were expecting a foodie tour and this wasn’t it. The history of Bologna was great though

Great guide, abundantly average food. - I found the guide to be amazing - I would love to learn more about the city from Emilia, who seems to know everyone in the historic city center. That said, I was very underwhelmed by the food part of the tour, which was the point for me. It felt like we went to very very average locations, and I thought the tortellini tasted like it came from a package. Wouldn’t recommend to people who want to be guided to good food in the city.

Disappointing Focus on Coupons over Cuisine - As a seasoned food adventurer (Bangkok, Taipei, Seoul, Madrid, Oaxaca, etc), I love a food tour to introduce me to a new culture through their food! While I've consistently had amazing experiences (all 5-star!), this Bologna food tour was sadly unpleasant.
Knowing the decision fatigue of choosing tours, especially in Italy's food capital, I felt compelled to share my experience to help fellow travelers.
A Slow Start and Missed Opportunities
The tour began at Piazza Maggiore with some historical tidbits, but a whole hour passed before our first bite! We then arrived at the vibrant Quadrilatero market, where we were offered Tigelle with ragu...as coupons for later! We were all hungry, so naturally, we opted to eat then.
Next came the balsamic vinegar tasting. Unfortunately,as explained by our guide, because we chose to eat at the prior stop rather than take the coupons for later, another group jumped ahead. The wait wasn't filled with history or information, just awkward small talk. The tasting itself lacked detail – just age statements (one bottle even ran out!). Luckily, a fellow traveller had recently done a balsamic tour and shared their balsamic knowledge.
Coupons & Confusion
Following the vinegar, we received more coupons – this time for gelato! It felt like these "try-later" options detracted from the food tour experience of actually trying and learning about food!
Finally, we reached a restaurant with a stunning terrace view of the Two Towers. Here, we had a small portion of lukewarm Tortellini with Parmesan cream. While the view was lovely, the food itself felt underwhelming, especially considering the lack of earlier tastings.
Disorganized Distractions
Overall, the focus on food history, interesting tips, and food exploration was minimal. The guide's information, though potentially interesting, felt disjointed and often strayed from food or the tour itself. Travel anecdotes can be charming, but here, the disorganization became distracting.
Recommendation: Look Elsewhere
Sadly, I can't recommend this tour. Perhaps it was an off day, but with so many other options, I wouldn't risk it. This was so poor that I felt I needed to ask for a partial refund, which was declined.
This tour simply didn't deliver the delicious cultural immersion I crave. Food lovers, explore your options and find a tour that truly celebrates the food capital of Bologna.
