Chasing Sunsets and Fireflies in Bongawan: A Day of Wildlife and Wonder
Drawn by the promise of wildlife and stunning sunsets, I embarked on the Kota Kinabalu Sky-Mirror Beach & Proboscis Monkey River Cruise. Despite the rain, the experience was filled with magical moments and unforgettable encounters.
A Journey to the Heart of Borneo
As a digital nomad, I often find myself chasing the next adventure, and this time, it led me to the enchanting landscapes of Bongawan, Malaysia. The allure of the Kota Kinabalu Sky-Mirror Beach & Proboscis Monkey River Cruise was too tempting to resist. Despite the rain and drizzle that accompanied parts of the afternoon, the experience was nothing short of magical.
The journey began with a timely pick-up from my hotel, where I met fellow travelers who were just as eager to explore. Our guide, Nick, kept us informed through a WhatsApp group, a handy feature that ensured we were all on the same page. The commute to the river was comfortable, thanks to the cool AC in the van, and the clean facilities at the river cruise point were a pleasant surprise.
Dancing with Monkeys and Capturing Reflections
Our first encounter with the wildlife was with the long-tail monkeys. Guided by James, who seemed to have a special connection with the animals, we watched as the monkeys playfully boarded our boat. It was an interactive experience, with even the youngest travelers getting a chance to feed bananas to the dozen or so monkeys, including a mother with her baby. James’s expertise ensured that the monkeys were friendly and non-aggressive, making the experience enjoyable for everyone.
As we continued our journey, we were fortunate enough to spot two proboscis monkeys perched atop a tree. These elusive creatures are known for their shyness, and seeing them felt like a stroke of luck. The guides respected their wild nature, allowing us to observe them without any interference.
The highlight of the afternoon was the visit to the Sky-Mirror Beach. The rain paused just in time for us to capture stunning mirror-like photographs. The guides, including Nick and Dandan, were instrumental in helping us pose naturally, even braving the incoming tide to ensure we got the perfect shot. I even attempted a small jump, and the resulting photo was a delightful surprise.
A Magical Evening with Fireflies
As the sun set, we embarked on the second part of our tour, cruising back to the twinkling lights of the fireflies. The sight was nothing short of a magical Christmas tree, with fireflies lining both sides of the river. The crew demonstrated their expertise by using light to interact with the fireflies, allowing us to experience their glow up close. Nick’s gentle sweep of his hand placed several fireflies into my palm, creating a moment that felt truly enchanting.
Dinner was a satisfying affair, with home-cooked dishes like curry chicken and stir-fried bee hoon laid out in a buffet style. It was a comforting end to a day filled with adventure and wonder.
Returning to the hotel just before 9 PM, my heart was full from the day’s experiences. The friendly and helpful team, from the guides to the cooks, made the journey memorable. It’s moments like these that remind me why I chose this path of exploration and discovery. Until the next adventure, I carry these memories with gratitude and joy.
