Embarking on your journey during the early hours enhances your chances of spotting the more elusive avian species. You will be collected by your vessel, accompanied by an ornithological expert. Historically, Muthurajawela was renowned for its superior rice cultivation, yielding some of the finest grains in Sri Lanka. However, the construction of the Dutch Canal is thought to have caused saline water to infiltrate the soil, rendering it infertile. Consequently, the lands were forsaken, and nature reclaimed its territory, transforming it into one of the most ecologically diverse marshlands in Sri Lanka. Declared a sanctuary and a wetland of international importance in 1996, it now encompasses 15,395 acres (6,230 hectares), harboring over 190 varieties of flora and in excess of 200 species of fauna, which includes a bird population exceeding 100 different species.

Bird lovers don’t want to miss this private 3-hour birdwatching tour of Muthurajawela Marsh, one of the top bird sanctuaries in Sri Lanka. On a boat safari, you’ll have the chance to see the birds of the region who live around the lagoon near Negombo.
