A Journey Back in Time

As a digital nomad, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that offer a glimpse into the past while being easy on the wallet. When I heard about the Villa de Leyva Day Trip, I knew it was a must-do. The promise of exploring a historic Colombian village, complete with cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, was too enticing to pass up.

The day began with a scenic drive from Bogota, and our guide, Diestefano, was a gem from the start. His knowledge of the area and its history was impressive, and he had a knack for storytelling that made the journey even more enjoyable. As we approached Villa de Leyva, the landscape transformed into a picturesque setting that felt like stepping into a different era.

Exploring Villa de Leyva

Upon arrival, the charm of Villa de Leyva was undeniable. The town’s main square, one of the largest in South America, was bustling with life. We took our time wandering around, sipping on rich Colombian coffee, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Diestefano was patient and never rushed us, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience.

One of the highlights was visiting the Museo del Chocolate, where we indulged in some of the finest chocolate I’ve ever tasted. The museum offered a fascinating insight into the history and production of chocolate in the region. Another stop was the Museo Paleontologico de Villa de Leyva, which showcased an impressive collection of fossils, reminding us of the area’s ancient past.

Hidden Gems and Local Delights

Diestefano’s local knowledge was invaluable as he guided us to some hidden gems, including the stunning terra cotta house. This architectural marvel was unlike anything I’d seen before, and it was a favorite among our group. We also explored the beautiful surrounding towns, each with its own unique charm.

Food is always a highlight of my travels, and this trip was no exception. Diestefano introduced us to some fantastic spots for arepas, a Colombian staple that quickly became a favorite. The day was filled with laughter, learning, and delicious food, making it an unforgettable experience.

As the day came to an end, we returned to Bogota late in the evening, feeling a bit guilty for keeping Diestefano out so late. However, his dedication and passion for sharing his culture were evident, and he truly went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable day. This trip was a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights, and I can’t recommend it enough for fellow budget travelers looking for an authentic Colombian experience.
