A Journey Through Time: Discovering Bracciano

Our family’s European adventures have always been about uncovering the hidden gems that lie beyond the well-trodden paths. This time, our journey took us to the enchanting medieval town of Bracciano, nestled in the verdant countryside of Northern Lazio. As we arrived, the first thing that struck us was the breathtaking view of the crystalline waters of the volcanic lake, a serene backdrop to the town’s labyrinth of medieval alleys.

Our exploration began with a visit to the magnificent Castello Orsini-Odescalchi, a Renaissance masterpiece that stands proudly overlooking the lake. The castle, with its perfectly preserved frescoes and panoramic views, was a delight for both the adults and the children. As a museum curator, I was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the artwork and the stories they told of a bygone era. The kids, on the other hand, were thrilled to explore the castle’s nooks and crannies, imagining themselves as knights and princesses in a medieval fairy tale.

Despite the allure of the castle, it was the town itself that truly captivated us. The Splendor of Caprarola

Our next stop was Caprarola, home to the stunning Villa Farnese. The drive through the rolling hills of Lazio was a journey in itself, offering picturesque views of the countryside that seemed to stretch on forever. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the grandeur of the villa, a testament to the opulence of the Renaissance period.

The villa’s architecture was nothing short of spectacular, with its spiral staircase and beautifully adorned rooms. As we toured the villa, our guide shared stories of the Farnese family and their influence on Italian history. Although our guide was not as knowledgeable as we had hoped, the beauty of the villa spoke for itself, leaving us in awe of its splendor.

For the children, the highlight was the villa’s gardens, a sprawling oasis of greenery and fountains. They spent hours running through the maze-like hedges, their laughter echoing through the air. It was a reminder of the joy that comes from exploring new places and experiencing the wonders of the world through the eyes of a child.

Viterbo: A Step Back in Time

Our final destination was Viterbo, known as the Città dei Papi. This historic town, once home to the Popes during the 13th century, is a treasure trove of medieval architecture and history. As we walked through the town’s ancient streets, we were transported back in time, surrounded by the echoes of a distant past.

The Palazzo dei Papi was a highlight of our visit, with its elegant arched loggia and fascinating history. We learned about the longest papal conclave in history, a tale that intrigued both the adults and the children. The town’s medieval quarter, with its vine-strewn alleys and tinkling fountains, was one of the best-preserved we had ever seen, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who lived centuries ago.

While the tour involved a fair amount of driving, the opportunity to explore these hidden jewels of Italy was well worth it. Each town offered a unique perspective on Italy’s rich history and culture, making it a memorable experience for our family. Despite the minor hiccups with the guide and the need to rush at times, the tour was a beautiful adventure that left us with a deeper appreciation for the lesser-known corners of this incredible country.
