Highlights
  • The Shepherd of the Hills - During the 1800’s, the Ozark hills were wild and untamed. Crime was rampant and law enforcement had a difficult time. Eventually, a group formed to help law-abiding citizens. Soon enough, this group became so powerful they were bending the laws for their own gain and they became worse than the criminals they originally formed to fight against.

This two-hour long production features a shoot-out, the actual burning of a log cabin, a mystery, a love story, and a moral message that is as true today as it was a century ago.

You will be introduced to fascinating characters as they arrive on wagons or horseback including the pillar of the community, Old Matt as well his son, Young Matt. Other characters include beautiful Sammy Lane, villain Wash Gibbs, the mysterious Shepherd, and the vigilante Baldknobber gang.

An Authentic and Honest Ozark Experience - Harold Bell Wight’s Shepherd of the Hills is a beautifully crafted novel that tells an authentic part of the regions past. This production wonderfully brings his words to life weaving drama, action and comedy in a formula that will entertain the entire family. As a fan of the novel, I enjoyed the parts where dialogue was directly picked up from the book, those words practically sing. Everyone, especially children, will be delighted by the real life action and effects. The production is masterfully crafted taking full advantage of the natural setting as if goes from dusk to nightfall with use of stage and practical lighting. It’s just magical to see the story come to life in an authentic setting. This production represents the classic entertainment tradition that allows the Branson region to grow into the destination it is today. I find it walks the line between portraying the “hillbilly” in a comical entering manner and a deeper more authentic one. There’s enough substance in the material to carry the comic relief and an authentic love for and respect of the heritage.

Wonderful Experience - We took our grandkids while on vacation. It was a great experience! First, they enjoyed the park including put put and barn animals. The show was awesome and they loved the audience interaction. I highly recommend. A few tips…get there about two hours before the show to enjoy everything your ticket includes and bring a light jacket as it gets cold when the sun goes down.

Not what it used to be. - While it was once something to see this place is way past its prime. It’s looking run down and tired. While I think the story had a large draw for visitors in the past I don’t think the younger generation are interested. If you didn’t read the book, which I didn’t, it’s hard to understand what the play is about. We also did the bbq dinner bash before and the food left a lot to be desired. My wife came here over 30 years ago and said unfortunately it’s not what it used to be. I was hoping I would really enjoy it and want to bring my grandkids but they would not enjoy the show. They would like the high ropes and zip lines but the high ropes course sun shades were ripped and hanging on the course. If they won’t keep up with that it made us wonder what other maintenance they were lax on. We also did the farm tour. Even though our guide was good the tour was not worth what we spent either. It was too long.

Great story if you can hear it. - A great story. This was not my first time seeing this performance. The sound system is a bit lacking. It was difficult to follow the dialog especially for those that are a bit hearing impaired and who were unfortunate enough to have teenagers seated around them.

Vacation - First time at Shepherd of the Hills. The venues on the ground are wonderful. Food was good. Then we went to the show outdoors. I loved the arrangement and setting. But, the show was very hard to follow. They lost me 10 mins into it. The best part was the intermission when you could join the actors for a little square dancing and fellowship.... It seemed to drag on way too much.

Amateurish - Excellent set. With exception of Dad, the acting was on the level of a high school play. Trams were unsafe. Make better use of your time.

Visit 2024 - Our family booked the outdoor drama play…… the Wild West Bill show. It was a complete let down. The show has no real plot and they sing and waste a lot of time! Sir;ey not worth the price they charge. They do offer 2 shows. This show and the original show about The Shepherd of the Hills. I would highly recommend the Shepherd of the Hills show.
