Highlights
  • The Shepherd of the Hills - Before the lights and the glitz and glamour, a shepherd walked these hills.

Weary and spent, the shepherd paused in the Ozark mountains and as he sought healing in the fresh, clean air of the hills, he compiled notes for a novel that would become an incredible impact on the United States.

This shepherd, a modest preacher named Harold Bell Wright, began to love the simple, country folk of the Ozarks. He especially connected with John and Anna Ross who would become the inspiration for Old Matt and Aunt Mollie Matthews, who play a key role in The Shepherd of the Hills. Wright would often camp outside their homestead, sit on the lookout mentioned in the book, and dream up the story of joy and sorrow, hardship and love, violence and restoration, that would become the first novel to sell one million copies in the United States. Wright dedicated his novel to his wife with the following lines which demonstrate his strong connection to the Ozark hills.

Sooo much to do! - Our six-year-old grandson and I explored this adventure park while the others were on the canopy zipline. They got done zip lining before we were ready to leave the adventure park! There was so much to do. This is well worth the money for a leisurely time with Children between 4 and 10. It was very hot while we were there, and the shade was welcome as well as some stops in AC’d places throughout the park. We would recommend taking cooling cloths and cold Water in the peak of the summer. However, the way it set up, you can return to the coolness of the restaurants as often as you please during the day. It offers a lot of adventure, satisfies curiosity and expends a lot of energy, leaving tired….. we were surprised by an impromptu afternoon nap when we returned to the condo!

Great fun - We loved it all, we did the historical tour ( I would highly recommend cowboy John ) we did the dinner and the drama. The drama was well put together and told the story of the Ozarks. Great way to spend several hours.

Awesome fun for all ages - The reviews of this place really confuse me because my family of 6 just got back from 6hrs of fun- open to close for Springfest event. Look up a map of this place and see that it’s fairly large with more than we could get done in 6 hrs. There are many more animals than a previous review stated. We saw many goats from mamas to babies, rabbits, chickens, llamas, donkeys, cows and farm dogs. We played mini golf, rode the slides, and enjoyed the treetop swing bridge. We explored all the historical buildings, ate in the restaurant, tried the ropes course, Inspiration tower, and mountain coaster. We ran out of time for the hayride and playground. Didn’t see a show this time but will in the future. Also would love to do the zip lines next time. We enjoyed the ice cream shop on our way out. Maybe the other reviews are outdated but don’t miss this place. We loved it! Ages 7, 18, 20, 40+

Great history - The tour we took around the Old Homestead property was very interesting because of our guide Rad. He shares so many facts not only about the book but the history of the area. Our only regret was that after listening to him, we didn’t have time to add the play to our itinerary. If we are ever on the area again we’ll certainly make time for it. We went up to the top of Inspiration tower and saw a beautiful birds eye view of the hills. Definitely take time to visit this place and if you’re lucky Rad will be your guide!

Tour Guide: Rad Historical Tour - We took the tour in the morning and watched the play in the evening. Rad gave a very informative tour and took the time to answer our questions. We had listened to the book a few days previously and the tour really helped to bring everything together. Rad took the time after the tour to give us some good hiking locations. He did a great job. We really enjoyed the play in the evening. The actors did a terrific job.

Historic Tour - The best thing about our tour was our guide, Rad. It was obvious he had a love for The Shepherd of the Hills homestead. He had so many interesting stories to tell us about The Homestead and its history. One could almost envision living there and being part of all the goinings-on. We were glad we took the tour before we went to the outdoor drama later the same day.

Wholesome but unremarkable for cost - There is a wholesome feel to this park. We had kids age 8 to 14. We all had fun. Old timey buildings, a cute mining area, gorgeous views, farm animals, and a fun slide. The park is like if a grandpa had a huge amount of land to set up fun for his grandkids. There was almost no staff. We bought gem mining bags, and to my surprise, we were handed a big sack of dirt to carry with us on our arrival. Literally no staff members could tell us where the mining was located. There is a building full of games like darts, pool, and foos ball...a lot like a happy grandpa's basement :) If the cost of entry was more reasonable, this review would have an additional star. We also went on the alpine coaster and it was fun for all.

Disappointed and saddened because of it. - Not much here. A few old historical buildings with minor descriptive placards. Looks like they may have some live entertainment occasionally, but not frequently. Website for entire complex was confusing. Petting zoo was 10-15 goats and 1 sheep. Some mildly interesting games or exhibits in the kids play area. Hours on website did not match reality. Really seem to be trying to monetize things that should really just be included in the primary experience of the main play and smaller shows. You can tell this complex used to be a major attraction but time and society is passing it by which is a shame.

Pretty disappointing - Let me start off by saying this portion of the park has great potential but you can tell it doesn't get much attention from the staff. We approached the gate to enter the homestead but are unable to purchase tickets there. We then had to walk back inside to purchase tickets. I was then overcharged for the combo ticket that was advertised on the booth outside for $12. After bringing it to the attention of the girl who rang me up, she argued with me stating that the price has been increased. After a bit of discussion she processed a return and gave me the price that was advertised outside, with quite a bit of an attitude. We were not given any direction on where activities were located once inside the homestead section, though there are signs it's a bit confusing. Our combo ticket included a small bag of mining dirt but we were sent all over the park before anyone could give us a clear answer on where to pick it up. The girl working the booth on the other side of the park was unsure of how many bags to give us even though we purchased 4 combo tickets. The mini golf had debris all over the course and our balls got stuck a few times in some of the obstacles. My boys were pretty disappointed at conditions of this side of the park. The staff and experience at the ropes course set a very high standard but the rest of the staff and park fell way short. We would not visit the homestead again.
