Embark on a one-day exploratory journey to the majestic Rupea Fortress and the intriguing Racos Geological Complex. The final volcanic eruptions of the Carpathian Mountains happened in the area of the Persani Mountains, leading to the creation of the ‘Basalt Triangle’ (Racos - Rupea - Comana de Sus). These eruptions occurred between two and half a million years ago and the most significant basalt outcrops are currently safeguarded within the nationally important geo-sites: Racos Geological Complex and Rupea Basaltic cliff.

Today, the Racos Geological Complex stands as a testament to the Quaternary basaltic volcanic eruptions that happened roughly between 1.3 and 1.5 million years ago, with evidence still present in the three quarries.

Have a look at the Brazi Basalt Quarrie where the Brazi Lake, also known as the Emerald Lake by the locals, began to take shape once the mining activities ceased. The tour continues to the Basalt Columns Natural Monument, a site where basalt mining came to a halt in the 1960s and was subsequently declared a natural monument.
