An Anglo-Saxon origin has also been proposed, as there are similarities with a helmeted figure found on ornaments from that era.

Alternatively, the Long Man might be the creation of an artistic monk from the nearby Wilmington Priory, crafted sometime between the 11th and 15th centuries.
