The De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary is located just an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. It provides a wonderful opportunity to learn about intriguing creatures such as the wild dog, cheetah, and various species of owls and vultures. The sanctuary is an ideal place to get close to cheetahs and wild dogs, and it also features a variety of other fascinating animals, including honey badgers, wild cats, and caracals. The center is dedicated to breeding some of these rare mammals and raising awareness about the importance of conservation.

The De Wildt Cheetah Centre was founded in 1971 with the goal of breeding endangered species. Over the past two decades, the Centre has achieved significant success in breeding cheetahs, a species that was once threatened. To date, nearly 600 cheetah cubs have been born at De Wildt, a remarkable improvement from the days when South Africa’s cheetah population was estimated at just 700.

Although the cheetah project was the foundation for the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre’s conservation mission, it soon expanded to include other rare and endangered species such as the wild dog, brown hyena, serval cat, suni antelope, blue and red duiker, bontebok, riverine rabbit, and vultures, including the very rare Egyptian vulture.

Many of these animals have been successfully bred for reintroduction into the wild, aiding in the repopulation of areas where these species have become scarce or extinct.
