This is the Dutch name for the lake, composed of two Dutch words: “minne,” meaning both “common” and “love,” and “water,” meaning “water.” Therefore, the most accurate translation would interpret “minne” as “common,” since these were the “common waters, community waters, everyone’s water,” as it was the location of the old port of Bruges, a site deeply connected to the city and the daily life of its citizens.
