Discovering Bruges: A Historical Haven
Bruges, often referred to as the “Venice of the North,” is a city that effortlessly marries its rich medieval history with modern-day charm. As the weather turns chilly and the skies remain overcast, there’s no better time to delve into the cozy indoor escapes that this Flemish gem has to offer. With temperatures hovering around the mid-30s to 40s Fahrenheit and a high chance of rain, the weekend of November 23rd and 24th is perfect for exploring Bruges’ historical and cultural treasures from the comfort of its indoor attractions.
Begin your journey with a Custom Historical Tour that runs from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on both days. This private, customizable tour allows you to tailor your experience to your interests, whether they lie in architecture, culture, history, or the arts. With an official city guide leading the way, you’ll explore iconic sites such as The Markt, the economic heart of Bruges, and the Italian quarter at Oude Beursplein. Discover the remnants of the 13th-century city wall at Pottenmakersstraat Toren and the Spanish quarter at Spanjaardstraat. The tour also includes visits to the Groeningemuseum, home to five centuries of Flemish art, and the Gruuthusemuseum, where you’ll uncover the story of the Gruuthuse family and Bruges’ history. A recent review from July 2023 highlights the tour as a “Hidden Gem,” praising the guide’s ability to tailor the experience to personal requests.
A Hidden Gem! - Just a short train ride from Brussels, is the absolute “Must See” city of Bruges. Although we were constrained for time, our tour guide, Xavier squeezed in a ton of tour in a few short hours. His communication prior to meeting was exceptional and he tailored our day around our requests. I highly recommend visiting this city and choosing this guide and company. (Reviewed at: 2023-07-30)
Embracing the Arts and Sciences
For those with a penchant for the arts and sciences, Bruges offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricacies of human anatomy at the Body Worlds Expo. Available from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on both days, this exhibition is a celebration of the human body’s capabilities. Located just a short walk from the railway station and Market Square, the Body Worlds Expo features over 200 exhibits, including full-body plastinates and individual organs, arranged in realistic positions to demonstrate how our anatomy functions in daily life.
The exhibition also includes an interactive “anatomical mirror,” allowing visitors to project a magnified image of their internal reflection, providing a fascinating insight into their own body movements. A review from October 2024 describes the exhibit as “Literally, an Inside. ide!” and praises its educational value and engaging presentation.
Literally, an Inside. ide! - A very well-presented exhibit of the human body in many ways. The explanations were very clear and not too clinical. The theme of being active and living a healthy life was woven through the displays. It took a bit to adjust to the graphic displays of muscles, nerves, etc. One of the best activities was to be holographically shown on a screen and see the inner workings of the anatomy. Pretty cool!
