Highlights
  • Mihai bravu 486 - Your Bucharest communist tour will begin with a trip to some of the metro stations built under the Ceausescu Regime. The first line was opened in 1979, and the metro network is completely different from other systems in Eastern Europe, having been built with two purposes in mind: speed of transit and practicality. You will then visit a communist neighborhood that was built especially for the working class. Here you will catch a glimpse of what the day-to-day lives of common people looked under the rule of the communist party. This walking tour is also a perfect opportunity to spot some of the street art that was strictly prohibited during Ceausescu’s reign.

Additional Information

During the communist era, which fanatics referred to as the Golden Era, Bucharest underwent drastic changes. These included the demolition of buildings within a 6 square kilometer (4 miles) area in the city’s core, the removal of statues representing Romanian royalty, and the erasure of their engraved images from the Arch of Triomphe.

Even though Nicolae Ceausescu, one of the last European dictators, was stripped of his power over three decades ago, the influence of the communist regime can still be distinctly seen throughout the Eastern Bloc and particularly in Bucharest.

You can get a glimpse of the impact of the Communist era on Romania by going on a historic tour of Bucharest. The tour takes you to mass transit stops and residential buildings from that time, providing insight into the daily lives of those who lived under Ceausescu’s rule. Included in the tour are visits to significant landmarks like the Parliament Palace and Ceausescu’s Residential Palace.

Learning about the Fall - The Ceacescu home. Talk about self indulgence! This tour helped put a real face on an incredible story, being the 1989 fall of Communism in Romania. Our tour guide, Marcel, gave very detailed explanations and the tour was well planned.

Best Communism History Tour In Bucharest! - If you want to get out of your hotel room in Bucharest and are also interested in history/politics - this is a GREAT tour. Romania has a fascinating history. Our guide, Marcel, was an absolutely a wonderful guide to us for the day! He was so polite and full of history/commentary about Romania itself! Was able to see different areas of the city I wouldn’t have seen otherwise. We also were able to see/ride the subway with a local who knew the ropes. I normally don’t ventured into underground Metros that I am not familiar with, but he made us feel safe so all in all it was neat to be able to say I had the experience here in Bucharest. I was a bit under the weather by nightfall and he was kind enough to bring me to the local market as well as the pharmacy. Translating for us for various things helped tremendously! We really enjoyed the restaurant he brought us too. Great food with a pleasant ambiance/pretty view!

Such an Interesting Day....Thank You! - My Husband and I had a wonderful day and extremely interesting private tour with Mikaela. She was very knowledgeable about the Communist era and of Romanian History and Culture in general. Having excellent English we learnt so much from this excellent guide, leaving us inspired to read and learn even more about Romania. Mikaela was also very friendly and kind about my walking issues. She spotted places for me to sit down regularly. A huge thankyou from us both, we would highly recommend this tour and Rolandia as a company.

The real face of communism - My grandparents are from China, and they lived under communism, but what I found out in Bucharest do the help of Ciprian exceed my expectation. It's incredible how the Romanian people survived 45 years under a totalitarian regim — a great history lesson for the new generation. Bucharest is not an impressive city, but Ciprian's excellent commentaries and the visit to the Palace of the Parliament, followed by Ceausescu Mansion, are a must for the visitors that have only one day in Bucharest.
