Highlights
  • Batthyany Square - Our fully licensed local (born and raised in Budapest) tour guide will meet you at the metro exit in the park and introduce the itinerary of the Budapest Castle District tour, one of the city’s most historically significant landmarks. The Buda Castle District includes the Royal Palace, Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, Maria Magdalena Church Tower, and other important buildings, urban public art mini monuments, lookout terraces, and an underground cave system.
  • Matthias Church - Discover 800 years of history in an area that has witnessed several wars and occupations, with detailed commentary from your guide. Learn about the daily lives of the German, Jewish, and Hungarian populations in the district. Note: We do not enter the church.
  • Fisherman’s Bastion - Learn about the connection between Walt Disney and the Fisherman’s Bastion, the differences between crosses with one, two, or three strips, and how to enjoy a free view from Castle Hill.
  • Medieval Jewish Prayer House - Explore the Medieval Jewish Prayer House and the beautiful baroque residential buildings surrounding it.
  • National Archives of Hungary - Discover the massive destruction caused by WWII, the location of the Nazi stronghold, where wealthy Hungarians live, and the Muslim pilgrimage site for Gül Baba, the Ottoman Turkish monk and soldier.
  • Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum - Learn about the underground life of Castle Hill, its labyrinths, and its defensive role over the centuries. See the funniest public statues in Budapest and learn about the womanizing light cavalry fighters known as “huszar.”
  • Buda Castle - View the massive building that once served as the residence of Hungarian kings, rebuilt many times due to war destruction. Learn about the mythical bird of the Hungarians, see where the president and prime minister’s offices are located, and much more.
  • Prince Eugene of Savoy’s Equestrian Statue - Enjoy the beautiful panorama of the Pest side of the River Danube from the terrace. If you’re lucky, we’ll test your knowledge with tricky questions about the major Castle Hill landmarks and the life of Hungarians. The tour will conclude with practical information and time to answer any remaining questions.

Just do it! It free and a great way to spend 2 hours of your day - Boulash was very enthusiastic and was very eager to share the history of Hungary in two hours with us. The tour itself was very well thought out, we saw all the big attractions so to speak and he could tell us a great deal about each of them.

Excellent Castle District Walking Tour - Sophia provided an excellent experience. She had a lot of interesting information to share. There was a lot of walking and a lot of uphill steps involved, but the exercise compensated for the very rich dessert I had that night! The meeting point was easy to find. Sophia was easy to understand and was very patient. We would take a tour with her anytime.

Great tour!2 hours full of history of the most important parts of Buda! - Our guide Bolas was fantastic. First of all it was obvious that he loves his job and he had a very interesting way to enlighten us on the history of Hungary, including cute jokes that made the whole experience unforgettable! He had a really clear and loud voice and was a fluent English speaker! This was our first free tour for me and my family and it was 100% successful! Keep up the good job!

The Buda castle tour everyone needs - Bolash was great. His clear humorous approach was much appreciated and he was very knowledgeable. I’d love to have had a little more time for photos but do understand how grateful we are he found time to get us to the changing of the guard on time. Thankyou.

Balázs is a good tour guide - We participated in this tour and had the fortune to walk next to Jonathan Balázs again. He gave us an amazing explanation during the tour. Despite we had a tour with him yesterday it was really entertaining. We recommend it.

A Solid Tour with Stunning Views - This walking tour offers great value and provides a wealth of information about the Budapest Castle District. While I learned a lot, I preferred the “Welcome to Budapest” tour for its content and flow. Be prepared for quite a few steps, but the climb is worth it, especially when you reach the Fisherman’s Bastion, which was the highlight for me.
