Highlights
  • Deak Ferenc Square - We meet centrally and then, head to the beautiful hills of Buda.

The square is named for Ferenc Deák, “The Wise Man of the Nation”. It’s a major intersection and transport junction in Budapest. Three lines of the Budapest Metro each converge on the station under the square. Tram lines 47 and 49 also originate from the square, as well as several bus lines.

  • Szell Kalman Square - Széll Kálmán tér is the starting hub for the many paths leading into the hills of buda. The originally anonymous area became Széll Kálmán tér (Széll Kálmán Square) in 1929, named after the Hungarian prime minister Kálmán Széll. Following the Soviet occupation and the Communist takeover in the country, the square was renamed to Moszkva tér in 1951 under the Rákosi regime. Following the fall of communist regimes in Eastern Europe, it was debated whether it should be renamed again to the original Széll Kálmán, but initially the name remained.
  • Szechenyi Hill - In 1948-1949, the famous pioneer railway (now known as the Children’s Railway) was built, with several stops and terminals on the surrounding hills. The railway was designed to develop tourism and train future railwaymen, but was also used for propaganda purposes during the period.

Excursions were organised for schoolchildren from all over the country, making the area a nationally popular family destination, especially for families with young children.

  • János-hegy - János Hill is the highest point of Budapest with a height of 528 m (1,732 ft), located in the western part of the city. János-hegy belongs to Buda Hills and it is connected to the popular tourist sight Normafa.
  • Elizabeth Lookout - The Elizabeth Lookout is a historic lookout tower on János Hill above Budapest. Built in 1911, the tower was named after Empress Elisabeth, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Frigyes Schulek was the architect.
  • Hűvösvölgy - Hűvösvölgy is a neighbourhood in the 2nd District of Budapest. The area is a popular hiking destination and is also an important transport hub. The suburb is known for its terminus of the Budapest Children’s Railway. A public transport terminus connects settlements north of the Buda with Buda city centre.
  • Szell Kalman Square - At the end we return to the former “Moszkva tér” (Moscow square), and head towards the ending location we agree upon.

Additional Information

We’ll journey to the Children’s Railway using the picturesque hillside cogwheel railway. At the station, we’ll explore an exhibition which showcases the railway’s history and illustrates how children oversee its operation.

After purchasing our tickets (which your children are welcome to do), we’ll embark on a delightful ride on the open-sided (in summertime) train that navigates through the forest of this national park, providing a firsthand experience of how the railway is managed by the children.

We’ll alight at the fourth station and then enjoy a brief walk through woodland to the Erzsébet Lookout Tower on János Hill, for a unique panoramic view of the city. Subsequently, after a refreshing ice-cream break, we’ll descend back to the city using the scenic two-seater chairlift, a much-loved attraction amongst both residents and tourists.

The most amazing city tour we've ever had - Miklos, our guide, picked us up at our apartment. Once we met, he immediately told us about the district we resided in - he really knows every niche in Budapest. After strolling around and learning about the history of Obuda, Pest and Buda, we went to a restaurant to learn Ungarian: Kerek egy sört! - Egészségedre! Following this, we took the public transport to more hotspots in the district and the remaining city of Pest. We learned a lot during those 3 1/2 enjoyable hours (Hungarian, History and Culture) - more than any Wikipedia article can teach us. We were also amazed how he shaped the tour around our interests. This combined made it the most interesting and exciting tour we've ever done. Thank you, Miklos, for this memorable tour through Budapest. See you again Köszönöm szépen, szia!

A warm introduction to an amazing country and language - In our first visit to Budapest (and hopefully not the last one!), on our sons' initiative we decided to book a two hours' class of Hungarian language. Wonderful Miklós turned it into a fully-fledged guided tour through the language, the history of the country, the beauty of Budapest architecture and the ways of Hungarian people. We still need our notes to ask for the toilet or order a beer in Hungarian, but we go back home with a new, broader vision of this part of the world that was so foreign to us a few days ago and now we're so fond of. Thank you, Miklós!!
