Taming the Tara: A Rafting Adventure in Montenegro’s Wild Heart
When the call of the wild beckons, there’s no resisting. The promise of rafting down Montenegro’s majestic Tara River was too tempting to pass up. Join me as I recount a day filled with scenic beauty, gentle rapids, and the rich flavors of Montenegrin cuisine.
The Long Road to Adventure
The day began before the sun had even considered rising, with a 6:50 am pick-up from Budva. As someone who has trekked through deserts and scaled mountains, I’m no stranger to early starts. But this was different. The anticipation of rafting down the Tara River had me wide awake and ready for the journey ahead. The bus ride was long, stretching over two hours, but the comfort of the coach and the scenic photo breaks made it bearable. We stopped for a coffee break at a charming local restaurant, Apolon, which was a delightful way to fuel up for the adventure ahead.
The journey continued through the breathtaking landscapes of Montenegro, with photo opportunities at Krupac Lake, Pluzine, and Piva Lake. Each stop was a reminder of the natural beauty that awaited us at the Tara River. The excitement was palpable as we finally arrived at Scepan Polje, where a traditional Montenegrin breakfast awaited us. Cold meats and cheese were on the menu, a simple yet satisfying start to the day.
Conquering the Tara River
With breakfast behind us, it was time to face the river. The transfer to the starting point was an adventure in itself, with 4x4 vehicles navigating the rugged terrain. As we geared up for the rafting experience, the safety briefing was brief, but the seasoned skippers assured us of a safe journey. The Tara River, with its pristine waters and stunning canyon views, was a sight to behold.
The rafting itself was a gentle paddle down the river, perfect for families and those new to the sport. For someone like me, who has jumped off cliffs and navigated more treacherous waters, it was a bit tame. But the beauty of the Tara Canyon more than made up for the lack of adrenaline. We stopped next to a waterfall for a refreshing swim, a moment of pure bliss in the midst of nature.
A Culinary Journey
After the rafting, we returned to Scepan Polje for a well-deserved lunch. The menu offered a choice between veal cooked under a bell or trout, accompanied by soup. I opted for the fish, which was delicious, while others in the group found the meat a bit too fatty. The staff was accommodating, providing a leaner cut for those who requested it.
As we made our way back to Budva, the journey seemed longer, stretching over four hours. But the camaraderie among fellow adventurers and the memories of the day kept spirits high. We reminisced about the stunning views, the thrill of the river, and the taste of Montenegro’s traditional cuisine. By the time we arrived back at 8:30 pm, I was exhausted but exhilarated, already planning my next adventure.
The Tara River Rafting experience may not have been the most extreme adventure I’ve embarked on, but it was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and camaraderie. For those seeking a family-friendly adventure with a touch of thrill, this is a must-do in Montenegro. Tara River Rafting
