A Journey into the Heart of Ugandan Craftsmanship

As a former city planner turned travel writer, I’ve always been drawn to the vibrant pulse of urban landscapes. But every now and then, I find myself yearning for something different, something that takes me away from the bustling streets and into the heart of a community. That’s exactly what I found in Buikwe, Uganda, at the Ugandan Jewelry Workshop.

The moment I stepped into the workshop, I was enveloped by a sense of warmth and camaraderie. The local female artisans welcomed me with open arms, eager to share their craft and their stories. These women, resilient and hopeful, have built a community around their art, using it as a means to provide for their families and uplift each other. As I sat down to mold clay beads, I was struck by the patience and dedication they exhibited. Each bead was a testament to their hard work and passion, and I felt honored to be a part of their world, even if just for a short while.
