Highlights
  • Steffy Tours Operator - An excursion recommended for both experienced and novice fishermen. The boats are usually about 42 feet and some are equipped with a probe and GPS. The captain of the ship will take us to one of the “hot spots” he knows in which we will be lucky and we can enjoy a good “combat” with some of the species that inhabit the waters of Punta Cana. Among these species the most appreciated is the blue marlin, especially for the beauty of this fish and the fierceness that it shows not to be caught, making spectacular jumps out of the water. Although we can achieve catches of many other species: barracudas, tunas, sailfish, etc.

Great value for the money. Spend more if you want newer boats or any luxeries. - They answered questions both over the phone and through email. Never luxuries. shed in the Dominican Republic, I had questions about fishing license, permits, and what was provided. He answered all my questions in an email and I referenced it several times over the months to our trip. You do not need any fishing license or permits. You do not pay for anything additional. We were told to bring towels, hats and sunscreen. We brought drammamine and we were glad that we did. We own a boat in US and are used to rolling in small waves. The six to eight foot swells and occasionally larger had everyone a little sea sick. The deck hand said everyday is like this. One of the four of us was sick the whole trip, We were originally scheduled for Wednesday morning, but since they only had us, scheduled it was not enough people to allow the boat expenses to break even. They gave us the option to charter the boat for just the two of us by paying an additional $350, which is a good deal, or reschedule for the next day. We went with the next morning. They picked the two of us up at seven am and the two more fishermen at two there resorts. We were told there would be another two, but when we arrived at the marina, we loaded on a tender and were carried out to a large offshore boat. They said it was 45 foot, and it looked it. It was ery old, but very clean. It was a very expensive boat when new. My wife and I have a 23 year old boat, so we don't have a problem with older boats when they are kept in good order. Within fifteen minutes after leaving the rolling started, and didn't stop till we were back. We are used to the gulf of Mexico in Texas, but this made us feel sick. I can only imagine how bad it would be without the dramamine The captain went out to some bouys and found some fish. From the flybridge he could see the schools of fish. Then he would circle near them. Each time one to three lines being trolled would hook up. The captain rotated us to take turns reeling them in. We all caught until we were tired. At 9 mahomahi we headed back. Once we started catching fish, we had a great time. The deck hand says that the seas are always like that and sometimes larger. They fileted a fish for our resort to cook for me, and took us back to shore for pictures. We had a great time. They spoke English and Spanish fluently and we always felt comfortable and safe with them. Captain Leo and deck hand Hector impressed us with their skills. We gladly tipped, Hector never stopped working, always preparing baited leads, pulling in fish, cleaning up, or other tasks. They had water, coke, and rum available. They offered a drink often, but we were not feeling well enough to drink anything. The only guy who did drink some water, fed the fish several times. My wife and I had a great time.

Be careful who you book through - We booked this trip through Otium at the Melia, we ended up on a boat with no radio, fish locators or basically any electronics to speak of, they drove around just hoping something would bite. This was a wasted trip, I would have gladly paid more to be on a modern boat with at least a chance of catching fish.

Not Safe - Do Not gonon this trip. I have been deep sea fishing multiple times in Punta Cana as well as Jamaica, Bahamas and Florida. I have had trip cancelled for safety reasons several times. They took us out in dangerously high seas. There were supposed to be a maximum of 6 people fishing they put 9 of us on the boat. My 16 year old daughter cried the entire time. 5 out of 9 people threw up the entire time. The boat felt like it would tip over at any moment. They never advised anyone about where life jackets could be found. The waves were crashing over the boat and they kept telling us where they were taking us was calm. This was a lie. I tried to use tgkhe bathroom but was thrown around the bathroom so much I could never free up a hand to even pull my pants down and then I struggled to even get out of the bathroom without being injured. Safety was not a priority. And no one should go out in deep seas with someone who has no regard for safety.

Poor Communication - Communicating with this group was extremely frustrating to put it mildly. After 3 e-mails days prior to the trip it still took our front lobby calling the driver for him to find us. We also watched the drive give up on finding two other groups at different hotels before finally taking us to the where the boats meet. Unfortunately for us this is where our trip gets more frustrating our boat captain never showed so after waiting for two hours we find the driver he apologizes and takes us back to our hotel saying let’s try again tomorrow. Do yourself a favor and hard pass on booking this excursion. I tried to contact TripAdvisor twice with no help from them I will never book any excursion through them either in the future.
