A Journey into the Heart of the Top End

As someone who has spent years advocating for sustainable tourism, I was thrilled to embark on the Top End Safari Camp tour. The promise of experiencing the Litchfield region’s wildlife and landscapes in an eco-conscious manner was too enticing to resist. From the moment we were picked up by our bus driver, affectionately known as ‘Sauce,’ I knew we were in for a unique adventure. His humor set the tone for the day, and his playful antics with the camera had us all laughing.

Our journey began with a thrilling airboat ride, guided by the knowledgeable ‘Rowdy.’ His passion for the ecosystem and the crocodiles was evident, and it was heartening to see someone so dedicated to the well-being of these magnificent creatures. As we glided through the channels, spotting a sizeable croc named Otis was a highlight. The airboat ride was not only exhilarating but also a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that we must strive to protect.

Immersed in Nature’s Bounty

The tour offered a unique opportunity to taste the local flora, with hunger-suppressing water lilies being a surprising delight. Our peaceful cruise along the River Finnis on ‘Cyclone Creek’ was a serene experience, enhanced by the delicious BBQ snapper from the Tiwi Islands. Watching the kids fish off the back of the boat added a touch of nostalgia, reminding me of simpler times spent in nature.

The encounter with a crocodile on the fishing line was an unexpected thrill, showcasing the raw power and unpredictability of the wild. Back at the pens, we observed the feeding of injured and captive-raised crocs. The sheer force of their jaws was awe-inspiring, a testament to the importance of respecting these ancient creatures and their habitat.

The day concluded with a helicopter ride, piloted by the charismatic Matt. As we soared above the floodplains, the breathtaking views of water buffalo, wild boar, and diverse birdlife unfolded beneath us.
