Walgun, as Cape Byron is known by its traditional custodians, maintains spiritual, cultural and historical importance for the Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) Aboriginal People. Aboriginal people have lived in the area for more than 40,000 years. Everything in the landscape has significance – land and waterways, plants and animals are associated with dreaming stories, cultural learning, cultural activities and cultural uses. It’s imperative that we all work together to conserve these areas.
  • Wategos Beach - Bottlenose dolphins are a reliable attraction and regularly seen charging through the surf. You may also observe turtles coming up to breath, rays swimming around the cape and a wide variety of sharks. Humpback whales migrate up and down the east coast between May and November.Various animals and reptiles are commonly seen on the trek including vulnerable and endangered species such as koalas, flying-foxes and rock-wallabies.
  • Cape Byron Lighthouse - As the adventure reaches the lighthouse, wanderers will get to enjoy the first sunrise in Australia and connect with the sun, a symbol of our eternal, expansive, unlimited being. When Sunlight hits our eyes, the pineal gland in our body, which is also referred to as the third eye, gets activated. With this activation, you can manifest and achieve your dreams close to your heart.

During sunrise, wanderers will be guided through a series of sun salutations which are a sequence of yoga poses (asanas) which are designed to engage, stretch, and invigorate the whole body while keeping the focus on meditative breathing. Conditioning the body and calming the mind to ensure a bounty of benefits are received.

The therapeutic technique of sun salutations during sunrise will result in a state of mindful awareness. This mental state will focus one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.

  • Most Easterly Point of Mainland Australia - The rocks forming the headland of Cape Byron are sedimentary, laid down on the seabed 300-500 million years ago. Movement of the earth’s crust later on heaved these layers above sea level, contorting and tilting them.
  • Cape Byron State Conservation Area - For every guided tour booked, Wander gives $3.50 to NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. The money is used to monitor vulnerable species and address threats, which can include feral animals, weeds and fire, and implements actions to target their impacts. There are a number of significant Aboriginal sites and artefacts within Cape Byron Conservation Area and the money also goes towards protecting these important cultural items.

A wonderful morning at Byron Bay - If you think all coastal walks are the same, then you definitely need to experience Wander Byron. This tour not only takes you to the easternmost point of Australia and the famous lighthouse, but more importantly, it allows you to learn about the local culture and hear local stories along the way, enriching your Byron Bay trip even further. One of the highlights of this tour is its timing. You get to experience a beautiful morning, and by the time the tour ends, it's only 7 a.m. You can head back to your accommodation to freshen up and rest before starting your next exploration of Byron Bay. I highly recommend this tour.

Lovely guide and views. - Millsy was a great guide, the hike and views were wonderful. It was cloudy so the sunrise itself wasn’t amazing, but loved the experience, and the lighthouse was lovely.

Being one with nature at crack of dawn… - Had the best experience doing sunrise walk to lighthouse in Byron Bay, such beautiful scenery and got to see whales, as well as a spectacular sight of dolphins surfing waves🐬 Took moments to stop and just absorb the morning freshness, sun energy as everything around us was waking up…. Millsy was very knowledgeable and a great tour guide, I thoroughly enjoyed the exploring with him and another fellow traveller, Juliana

Absolutely worth it. - A fabulous way to start your day. Start with an energizing drink, walk at your pace up the path; that is filled with spectacular views, stopping along the way. Great historical facts peppered in. Watch the grandiose seascapes as the sun comes up. The possibility of seeing whale sign in July are pretty good (or as we did a breach) and dolphins like to play in surf. Our host walked us through a bit of gentle, yoga alongside the lighthouse. We even spotted a rock wallaby. We were given a high quality snack and got shown some special spots for photo opportunities. Our host was happy to take photos for us and took his lead from our questions and actions. This tour is great bang for your buck. Go for it!!

Truly memorable sunrise hike!! - I absolutely loved this guided sunrise tour to the lighthouse. Very special experience to do on a guided tour. Milsy provided an elixir warm drink to start (ginger, cayenne pepper kind of drink). We started at the pass and headed up to the lighthouse stopping at vantage points with incredible views to Julian Rocks, Broken Head and Wategos beach. Milsy was warm and friendly, with a positive and uplifting vibe… and talked about the history of the lighthouse and invaluable indigenous knowledge of the area. We did some gentle sun salutations as the sun was rising. Truly special!! 😎 I left feeling uplifted, happy and more connected to self. Milsy makes it a truly unique experience. I highly recommend anyone wanting to hike up to the lighthouse in a group setting with an experienced tour guide to book Wander Byron🙏🌸 Thanks so much Milsy!! I loved it!!

Awesome and wonderful way to start the day! - The tour started an hour before sunrise in the carpark of The Pass with a quick briefing of what to expect, and a cup of an Ayurvedic tonic that warmed us up and got us ready for the climb ahead. It was still dark and quiet all around but for the boom and crash of nearby surf when we started off up the Cape Byron Walking Track. Unfortunately, at the time we went, the upper section of the track had been closed. But Millsy, our guide, knew an alternate route to get us to the lighthouse. Along the way, we stopped off at the Tallow Ridge Hand Gliding Launch Site and took in the panoramic view of the entire length of Tallow Beach stretching to the south. As we neared the lighthouse, and dawn, we could see the scenery lighten up all around us, the birds starting to chirp and twitter. The climb is moderate, very manageable for those in normal states of health. We got to the lighthouse in good time to see the sun peep over the horizon and cast its golden rays into our faces. Millsy led us through a series of yoga asanas (an abbreviated sun salutation) and breathwork, to fully take in this place (here) and this moment (now). The benefits of watching the sunrise include promoting a healthy circadian rhythm (resetting it for us city folks) leading to better sleep patterns and more restful sleep, elevating mood, reducing stress and anxiety and fostering the experience of awe. Some even say the colours of sunlight at rise are especially helpful for activating the pineal gland (some call it the 'third eye') - a portal to divine wisdom. I'm not sure if I got wiser on this occasion, but chatting with Millsy, who probably witnesses sunrises on a daily basis and throughout the seasons, I came away imbued with a sense of faith and optimism, that everything's going to be all right. Though we traverse a period of darkness in every 24-hour cycle, and at various times in our lives, light comes again, time after time, with every sunrise. As it did this glorious morning. As the sun rose further above the horizon, we made our way down. Along the way, we caught glimpses of spouts in the water, indicative of whales on their northern migration. If one is lucky, one may also see dolphins and turtles in the crystal-clear waters. We slowly made our way back to the starting point, taking in stories about Julian Rocks, or Nguthungulli to the Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) people. If watching a sunrise from the most easterly point of the Australian mainland is on your bucket list, then you should seriously consider Wander Byron. Save time by being guided up trails and tracks in the pre-dawn darkness by an experienced and accredited guide who knows the area and licensed by the NSW National Parks, avoid the stress and anxiety of wondering if you'll make it to the lighthouse in time for the sunrise, and share in this life-affirming and health-invigorating experience with like-minded fellow travellers.
