Highlights
  • Centro de Rescate Las Pumas - Las Pumas Rescue Center rescues wildlife, providing medical care and temporary homes to those in need of rehabilitation. In extreme cases, this temporary home may become permanent.

If youā€™re around Guanacaste and you (or your kids) want guaranteed animal sightings, then this is it.

Since itā€™s in the name, letā€™s start with those wildcats, as theyā€™re some of the toughest animals to spot in the wild. There are six species of wildcat in Costa Rica, and five wildcat species at Las Pumas Rescue Center: jaguar (Panthera onca), cougar (Puma concolor), jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), and margay (Leopardus wiedii).

And, while the wildcats are certainly a highlight, youā€™ll love also seeing Geoffroyā€™s spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), white-faced capuchin monkey (Cebus capucinus), greater grison (Galictis vittata), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), and scarlet macaw (Ara macao).

Additional Information

Did you know that zoos are outlawed in Costa Rica? This means that capturing and keeping animals solely for spectators to see them is against the law. While several wildlife rescue centers do allow visitors to observe wild animals, itā€™s a secondary function.

The animals you encounter in Costa Ricaā€™s refuges and wildlife rescue centers are mainly those that have been saved. This is the fundamental and crucial role of any rescue facility.

The majority of these animals have been rescued due to injury, because they were kept as pets, or due to being orphaned. They require rehabilitation, hopefully to be reintegrated back into their natural habitat. Unless they are unable to survive in the wild, these animals arenā€™t destined to live in the rescue centers permanently. One of the unique aspects of Las Pumas is that their enclosures are expansive and well-maintained, reflecting the animalsā€™ natural surroundings. If they are capable of returning to their wild life, theyā€™ll feel as though they are already there.

Hidden gem of a tour - Fantastic self-guided tour and opportunity to see many animals you otherwise might miss in the wild. Please note that if you go early in the morning the large cats are less active since they are nocturnal. Other than that it was a great place to support.

Pumas a Must Do in Costa Rica - Wonderful experience and highly recommended place to visit while in Costa Rica! We booked our admission ticket and tour in advance. We were greeted upon arrival by a professional, knowledgeable guide who told us the history of each animal and of the rescue center. She knew right where to find each of the pumas! Nice gift shop with unique childrens T-shirts! We spend a little over 2 hours and did a self "re-tour" after the official tour. Put this on your bucket list for Costa Rica.

Poor trip advisor experience! - Knowing in advance that we were paying $39 each for a $12 ticket we could have bought at the location
