If youāre around Guanacaste and you (or your kids) want guaranteed animal sightings, then this is it.
Since itās in the name, letās start with those wildcats, as theyāre some of the toughest animals to spot in the wild. There are six species of wildcat in Costa Rica, and five wildcat species at Las Pumas Rescue Center: jaguar (Panthera onca), cougar (Puma concolor), jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi), ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), and margay (Leopardus wiedii).
And, while the wildcats are certainly a highlight, youāll love also seeing Geoffroyās spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi), white-faced capuchin monkey (Cebus capucinus), greater grison (Galictis vittata), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), keel-billed toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), and scarlet macaw (Ara macao).

Did you know that zoos are outlawed in Costa Rica? This means that capturing and keeping animals solely for spectators to see them is against the law. While several wildlife rescue centers do allow visitors to observe wild animals, itās a secondary function.
The animals you encounter in Costa Ricaās refuges and wildlife rescue centers are mainly those that have been saved. This is the fundamental and crucial role of any rescue facility.
The majority of these animals have been rescued due to injury, because they were kept as pets, or due to being orphaned. They require rehabilitation, hopefully to be reintegrated back into their natural habitat. Unless they are unable to survive in the wild, these animals arenāt destined to live in the rescue centers permanently. One of the unique aspects of Las Pumas is that their enclosures are expansive and well-maintained, reflecting the animalsā natural surroundings. If they are capable of returning to their wild life, theyāll feel as though they are already there.
