The Journey to Cabo Pulmo

The sun was just beginning to rise as my wife and I set off on our journey to Cabo Pulmo, a place that had been on my radar for quite some time. Known for its vibrant coral reefs and the only living hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez, Cabo Pulmo promised an underwater adventure unlike any other. The drive from Los Cabos was long, about two hours, but the anticipation of what lay ahead kept our spirits high. We had our own music playing in the car, setting the perfect tone for the road trip.

As we drove through the rugged landscapes of Baja California, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of freedom that comes with the open road. We geared up, albeit with mismatched and well-worn equipment, and made our way to the beach. The lack of instruction didn’t bother us, seasoned adventurers that we are, but I could see how it might be daunting for a first-time snorkeler.

Once in the water, the world transformed. Schools of fish darted around us, their scales catching the sunlight in a dazzling display. The highlight was undoubtedly the giant school of Jacks, a sight so mesmerizing that it made the long drive worthwhile. The restrictions on time spent in the water were understandable, as preserving the delicate ecosystem is paramount, but it did leave me wishing for just a little more time to soak it all in.

Reflections on the Experience

As we made our way back to Los Cabos, I reflected on the experience. Cabo Pulmo had delivered on its promise of a unique snorkeling adventure, but it was not without its quirks. The tour company was accommodating and friendly, but the gear left much to be desired. It felt more like borrowing a friend’s equipment than a professional setup, which was fine for us but might not suit everyone.

The included lunch was a nice touch, though not quite to our taste, and the overall experience felt like a good deal for the price. For those who love snorkeling and have the time to spare, Cabo Pulmo offers a glimpse into a vibrant underwater world that is worth the journey. Just be prepared for a bit of a rustic adventure, and you’ll find the beauty of Baja’s coral reefs waiting to be discovered.
