ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF DECEMBER 7 - DECEMBER 8, 2024

Cagliari’s Winter Wonders: Indoor Adventures Amidst Ancient Ruins

Explore Cagliari’s rich history and culture this winter with indoor adventures perfect for the cool, breezy weather. Discover ancient sites and vibrant museums, making the most of your visit despite the overcast skies.

Unveiling the Mysteries of Tuvixeddu Necropolis

Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a city steeped in history, where ancient tales whisper through its cobblestone streets and historic sites. As winter casts its cool shadow over the city, the overcast skies and gusty winds create the perfect backdrop for exploring Cagliari’s indoor wonders and cultural treasures. Begin your journey with a visit to the Tuvixeddu Necropolis, the largest Punic burial ground in the Mediterranean. Available for exploration on both December 7th and 8th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, this site offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world.

Tuvixeddu, one of Cagliari’s seven hills, is a testament to the city’s rich historical tapestry. The Carthaginians, between the sixth and third centuries BC, chose this hill as their sacred burial ground, carving tombs directly into the rock. As you wander among these ancient graves, some reaching depths of 3 to 8 meters, you’ll be transported back in time, pondering the rituals and beliefs of the Punic people. The site was later repurposed during the Roman era, adding another layer of historical intrigue. A professional guide will accompany you, unraveling the mysteries of this ancient necropolis and providing insights into the evolution of burial practices from the Phoenicians to the Romans.

Review (Reviewed on 2024-02-15): Visit in the realm of the dead - One of the seven hills is the Necropolis, the town of the dead. The burial place of the former Phoenicians and Punics. Its approach is a bit complicated. We took a bus number 8 but we had to walk a lot. Bus number 1 would have been better. We wandering among the tombs carved into the limestone. Some of them are 3-8 metres deep. It’s free and I think it’s worth a visit.

Discovering the Ancient Wonders of Su Nuraxi

On December 8th, from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, embark on a journey to the Su Nuraxi of Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stands as a monument to Sardinia’s enigmatic past. This well-preserved nuraghe, one of over 7000 scattered across the island, offers a unique window into the island’s prehistoric era. These massive stone fortresses, shrouded in mystery, pose intriguing questions about their origins and purpose.

The tour also includes a visit to a Domus de Janas, or “fairy house,” a rock-carved area reflecting prehistoric funerary traditions. As you explore these ancient structures, you’ll be guided by knowledgeable locals who bring the history of these sites to life. The journey continues to Casa Zapata, a historical dwelling that now houses an archaeological museum, offering further insights into Sardinia’s rich cultural heritage.

Review (Reviewed on 2024-10-04): A trip not to be missed - Absolutely loved our trip. Our guide, Maggie, was really fun, friendly and very knowledgable - she made the experience special. This is such a unique trip, there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. I definitely recommend anybody, who stays in Cagliari, to experience this amazing site.
