A Morning Dive into the Blue

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon as I found myself on a small boat, skimming across the glassy waters of Parque Nacional Cahuita. The anticipation of the day ahead was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar thrill that I often experience before catching a perfect wave. This time, however, it wasn’t the surf that called to me, but the vibrant underwater world waiting beneath the surface.

Our guide, a local with a deep love for the ocean, briefed us on the coral reefs we were about to explore. As we slipped into the water, the world transformed into a kaleidoscope of colors. Schools of tropical fish darted around us, their scales shimmering in the sunlight. I even caught a glimpse of a gentle reef shark gliding gracefully in the distance. It was a reminder of the ocean’s vastness and the beauty that lies beneath its waves.

After two exhilarating snorkeling sessions, we were dropped off at Punta Cahuita. The beach, with its horseshoe shape, was a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a spread of fresh fruit and snacks. As I sat there, soaking in the sun, I couldn’t help but reflect on how the ocean always has a way of grounding me, no matter where I am in the world.

Into the Heart of the Forest

With our snorkeling adventure behind us, we embarked on a guided hike through the coastal forest. Our final stop was the Sloth Sanctuary, a place dedicated to the care and conservation of these unique animals. Here, we delved deeper into the lives of sloths, learning about their nutrition and anatomy. The sanctuary’s commitment to their well-being was inspiring, and it was heartening to see the positive impact they were making.

A canoe tour through the sanctuary’s channels offered a peaceful end to our adventure. As we glided through the water, surrounded by lush greenery, I felt a profound sense of tranquility. It was a fitting conclusion to a day that had been both exhilarating and enlightening.

Reflecting on the experience, I realized that while the waves will always be my first love, there’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored.
