To preserve these extraordinary monuments from the rising waters caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam, a joint effort between the Egyptian government and UNESCO was undertaken. This endeavor successfully relocated the temples to higher ground between 1964 and 1968, ensuring their protection for future generations.
The Temple of Ramses II, often referred to as the Great Temple of Abu Simbel or the Sun Temple of Ramses II, is dedicated not only to the pharaoh himself but also to the universal gods Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, and Amun-Re.
