Established by the Egyptian government in 1835 near the Ezbekieh Garden, the museum was later relocated to the Cairo Citadel. In 1855, the Egyptian government gifted all the artifacts to Archduke Maximilian of Austria, which are now housed in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization NEMC - The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is an expansive museum covering 490,000 square meters (5,300,000 sq ft) located in Old Cairo. Partially opened in 2017, it was officially inaugurated on April 3, 2021, by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi during the Pharaohs’ Golden Parade, which saw the transfer of 22 mummies, including 18 kings and four queens, from the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo. The museum showcases 50,000 artifacts, illustrating Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to the present.
