The exhibits are arranged in chronological order, beginning with the pre-dynastic period and concluding with the Greco-Roman era. The fortress is encircled by towering walls and contains numerous structures, including palaces, mosques, and museums.
One of the most notable structures within the fortress is the Muhammad Ali Mosque, also referred to as the Alabaster Mosque. Built in the nineteenth century by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the then ruler of Egypt, the mosque is crafted from white alabaster and features two minarets that soar above the fortress.
Inside the mosque, visitors can admire a large central dome surrounded by smaller domes and semi-domes. The walls are adorned with intricate patterns and calligraphy, and a grand chandelier hangs from the ceiling. The mosque also includes a courtyard with a fountain and numerous prayer halls.
