Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Constructed in memory of Tusun Pasha, Muhammad Ali’s eldest son who passed away in 1816, this mosque stands on the site of old Mamluk buildings in Cairo’s Citadel. Built between 1830 and 1848, it wasn’t completed until Said Pasha’s reign in 1857. The architect, Yusuf Boshnak from Istanbul, modeled it after the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. The foundation was laid using debris from the earlier Citadel structures.

Al-Azhar Park - Recognized as one of the world’s sixty great public spaces by the Project for Public Spaces, this park was developed by the Historic Cities Support Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, part of the Aga Khan Development Network. The park, which cost over USD $30 million to develop, was funded by a grant from Aga Khan IV, a descendant of Cairo’s Fatimid Caliphs.

Abou Tarek - Koshary, also known as kushari or koshari (Egyptian Arabic: كشرى [ˈkoʃæɾi]), is Egypt’s national dish and a popular street food. This traditional Egyptian meal combines pasta, Egyptian fried rice, vermicelli, and brown lentils, topped with a tangy tomato sauce, garlic vinegar, and garnished with chickpeas and crispy fried onions. It is often served with garlic juice, with garlic vinegar and hot sauce as optional additions.

Sharia Al Mu’izz Li-Din Allah - Commonly known as al-Muizz Street, this major north-to-south street in historic Cairo dates back to the city’s foundation by the Fatimid dynasty in the 10th century under their fourth caliph, Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah. Visitors can also see the Alaazhar Mosque and learn about its purpose. After Muhammad’s death in 632, a group of Muslims, later known as Sunnis, believed Abu Bakr should succeed him as caliph, while another group, later known as Shias, believed Ali ibn Abi Talib was the rightful successor.

Khan Al-Khalili - This bazaar and souq in Cairo’s historic center was established during the Mamluk era as a trade hub and named after one of its historic caravanserais. Today, it is a major attraction for both tourists and locals, housing many Egyptian artisans and workshops producing traditional crafts and souvenirs. Originally, Khan el-Khalili referred to a single building, but now it denotes the entire shopping district.
